Digital TV switchover date announced
Quote:
Today at the Australian Broadcasting Summit, Senator Conroy announced the switchover date for Australian free-to-air TV: December 31, 2013. Beyond this date, no analogue free-to-air TV transmissions will be made, freeing up bandwidth for additional digital channels and other digital services.
Senator Conroy also announced that a detailed roadmap for the switchover will be released by the end of 2008 and that 15 free-to-air channels will be available in most metropolitan regions by mid-late 2009.

Digital TV switchover date confirmed by Senator Conroy
No more analogue telly after December 31, 2013, but more digital TV before and after that date.

More digital TV!
STFU people still watching analog, eat it up and submit to digital goodness.
Now, what will they fill the 15 new channels with? (AFL channel please!)

And nothing budgeted for set-top units, which the government will inevitably have to subsidise.

2013?? Are you serious?
Wasn't it meant to be in 2009?
Honestly, go get a $30 STB from Crazy Clarks and be done with it...

Get one of the Air Force transport planes - drop them from the sky in little padded bags. I'm sure if you buy 1 million STB's, the unit price would plummet to about $5, hah

From what I've read, this date is it. Some metro areas will be shut down much sooner (2009 I think).

Which is precisely what they should have done instead of budgeting $5m for freakin' surveys. What a fucking waste.
Two months shy of the deadline there'll be a story on the news about how pensioners are up in arms because their TVs will no longer work, and the government will point out that they got over five years notice (which is fucking ridiculous anyway) but end up caving in and subsidising the cost - which will end up costing far more than if they just budgeted for it now.

I had one of those, it was called Fox Footy Channel. It was the only Sports Channel that I skipped, and was glad to hear that it was being replaced with Fox Sports 3.
As for the switchover, it will just keep getting delayed, the same as CDMA, the same as Digital Phones, and the same as Unleaded fuel.

I can't see what the big problem is, personally. I have an AWA STB 232 that only cost me 50 bucks from Big W, is easy to use, will work on just about any telly, and gets excellent reception on all digital channels - even with rabbit ears!
Like everyone else has said, if they want to give crappy analog (which I can't stand anymore, after a few months of having digital goodness) the chop for more digital goodness, I'm more than up for it.

I agree with you LCGuy however old people don't like changing things.. I have seen it enough in three weeks. Some rather spend $200 to buy a new compressor for their old fridge rather than buy a new one for $400. enough of the off topicness.
Austar have just recently jumped into the MyStar crap... which includes free to air stuff.. With AMAZING features like pausing + rewinding free to air TV.. yeah whatever.. Get a life and mow tcn33's lawn, its a bit long! or get a Digital Set Top Box Its a rip off IMO. They try to charge you to connect the damn thing to the arial.
