Visa/Mastercard Debit for Minors

I've been looking around for a Visa/Mastercard Debit card for under 18s for a while, to no avail.

1) The BOPO and equivalent pre-paid Visa Cards seem to be costly and inconvenient to refill. Are there any good ones?

2) PayPal doesn't seem to offer the Virtual Mastercard service in Australia

3) Do any banks have Visa/MC debit cards available to U/18s? I read somewhere that St. George offered it, but couldn't find any confirmation.

What options are available? Any help appreciated

St George has it. I don't know about under 18's but they do have a VISA debit.

It may be for under 18's too. Just call up and ask them on Monday.

Thanks for that,

But do you have you experience if these are available to minors?

I used to have a St. George Visa Debit when I was under 18.

Call ANZ and ask, they're open 24/7.

You don't need to apply for credit with a debit card, so anyone should be able to get one.

I've had a BankSA (St. George) Visa Debit for about 4 years (I'm 18 now).

I think my parents needed to sign it and everything, but I don't think it was too hard to get.

I just spoke to St. George and they said it was a no-go, even if co-signed.

ANZ's website states it pretty clearly, that one must be 18 or over.

Not having much luck

I think it involves having your parents sign the forms for either like spilla said.

If you are with ANZ, get a visa debit.. It takes a few days to process

It says you have to be 18 or over for a credit card... a debit card is not the same thing.

EDIT: I just started an application and entered a birthdate that would make me under 18... it declined me. Very strange indeed.

But then is it possible to get a card under the minors name?

Not trying to high jack this thread, but I'm also interested in getting a visa debit card having just turned 18, currently I'm with the commonwealth bank and from what I have found they don't offer visa debit cards. Also they are going to start charging me fee's. I'm thinking I might look at what other banks are around that might have cheaper fee's for students and offer visa debit cards. Any recommendations?

If you want a VISA debit go with Suncorp. If your at Uni they waive our fees, and I love their account structure. You can setup sub accounts that earn some pretty good interest, and cannot be accessed by the VISA.

On a side not, you cannot get a VISA under the age of 18, doesn't matter if it's a credit or a debit. It's against the law.

I myself have a VISA debit card with the National Australia Bank. Just have a look through the terms and conditions I came upon this under eligibilty;

NAB - personal transaction and savings products

Quote:
17 Eligibility criteria

17.1 The NAB Visa Debit card is available to persons over the age of 16 years.

17.2 Where the NAB Visa Debit cardholder is under 18 years of age but older than 16 years of age, a parent/guardian must be a joint accountholder to any eligible account linked to the NAB Visa Debit card. In addition to their responsibility as a joint accountholder, the parent/ guardian is also responsible to NAB for any use of the NAB Visa Debit card including any purchases and cash withdrawals until the NAB Visa Debit cardholder reaches the age of 18 years.

Meh, I've got a Bopo card at the moment, and well, it works. Not so happy about all the fees (eg, international conversion, loading the card, then separate fees for using it), but it's easy enough to reload (Any Bill Express outlet will do it instantly, or you can use bPay).
