What's TPG like as an ISP?
I recently churned from Pigbond over to iinet. Pigpond gave me 12GB on a 1.5Mbit for $69, there was no peak periods and I didn't really have a breakdown
So I went for the $49 iinet plan which is 4GB onpeak 8 off peak this wasn't enough so I upped it to the $59 plan which gave me an extra...don't larf...2GB peak. This is where it gets weird, that was *almost* enough peak but I kept falling short by a few days.
So I think OK I'll move up a plan I just need about 8GB peak, but the next plan at $79 give me 8Mbits but cuts my peak down to 7 GB (morons)
Anyhoo I checked out TPG and they will give me a 6 month contract and they allowance is more normal I can go back to a $49 plan which gives me 8 peak 10 off peak at 1.5Mbits perfect. Or even more tempting is the $79 8Mbit with 18GB not peak or off peak.
So it's a no brainer for me except for the final bit, can someone around here who uses TPG, recommend them, is there anything I should be aware of?

I can give a big thumbs up to Exetel. Have used them for the last 5 years and had very little outages, and their pricing is always close to the best you'll get. They also offer 6 month contracts, and their online facilities allow you to check usage, send SMS, upgrade your plan, change address, webmail, etc.

I have been with TPG for about 3 years now and they are good. The only issue is that their Customer Service call center is in China somewhere , i think and it gets quite difficult to understand them sometimes!

If you must have the best "dollars per GB" plan, then TPG is the way to go. If you want to have actual customer service, or a reliable connection (that doesn't slow down in peak times), then go elsewhere.

which telephone exchange?
Id look at internode, quality product at reasonable prices
many people have moved from TPG ADSL2+ to internode 1.5mb and said node was faster!

OK that's the sort of info I was looking for. I'm not fussed by customer support so much but can you give me some idea of what you mean by 'slowing down in peak time', for example a normal 1.5mbit will give me 160kbps at best, are you saying that in peak times I'll get significantly less than this? Like would it drop to 100 or less? Still might be worth a 6 month shot.
I'd really like to stay with iinet but I don't understand why their allocation is so whacky.
I don't get adsl2 here only adsl1. I'll check out the other suggestions, thanks for the input. |

Many friends of mine in my area have been very happy TPG as their ISP, one for instance has the 512/128 unlimited ($80) plan and he cannot recommend it more.
not bad value if you're not worried about the speed to much.

After following the advice of other Mactalkers, I switched to Internode. I don't get quite as fast a speed (14Mbps instead of 19Mbps), but it works 24/7, including peak times.

TPG's not too bad. We use them corporately, and I've been on a TPG connection (paid for by work) for about a year. I've had a couple of drop outs during the day...mainly due to router resets by Telstra during some recent upgrades that they were doing on the exchanges in BNE.
We're now no longer organising ADSL through the company, we're now responsible for it ourselves...so I figured I'd go back to Internode, but I'm sticking with TPG because you just can't get the cap I'm on for anywhere near the price I'm getting from TPG.

I spoke to the internode chap and they seem as good to talk to as iinet. He even jumped in to let me know that they don't shape p2p. I don't need the huge caps of TPG (yet) but you never know what 'no shaping' can do ;¬)
I'll give them a go for 6 months.
thnx for the comments, I won't write tpg off just yet though.

Been with them for 4 years. No problems, their pricing is always near the best for features offered. I have a number of friends who use the service as well, and they report the same experience. AND, they're an Australian-owned and operated company.

I was on TPG for ages. ADSL1 had a 20Gb cap for $50 a month with a 1.5Mb connection. They then told me that this wasn't available anymore and that I'd have to go with an ADSL2+ plan.
The price stayed the same. No peak or off peak nonsense. But the cap dropped to 18Gb per month.
I never had a problem with them, except for when I moved and couldn't get ADSL at the new place. So when I called to cancel my account, they were going to charge me for the next billing cycle because I didn't cancel early enough. I was a week into the current billing cycle.
Luckily my credit card got cancelled and they couldn't get their money 
That was my only gripe with TPG. About 9 months ago now.
They're ok. |
