Wireless broadband on my iMac G5

Anyone out there, I need help, I have just bought one of the Optus 3G wireless broadband modems, it works fine on my girl's PC laptop, but I have one of the 17" G5 iMac's, bought it in 2004 i think from memory. It doesn't allow me to connect to the net when I plug this wireless gadget in the usb?? Do I need to update all my software?? I am running Tiger, but haven't done any updates in about 2 years!!!!!! In my network connections assist it only has a red dot next to internal modem, no air port etc. Cheers.
