Broadband - Who YOU are using, and what you are paying!

G'day,

I did this in Feb06... figured it was time to ask everyone again, to get an indication of who is using what, and for what price...

So - please tell us...

ISP Name
Monthly Charge
Download Limit (Uploads included?)
Speed of Connection (if known)

(Go here to test your speed: http://speedtest.net )

For me:

Optusnet Cable
$32.44
36GB (12GB/24GB on/off peak, uploads excluded)
Average 8,000 - 10,000 kbps, upload around 100kbps

The addendum to my stats however is that I'm on a deal that's due to expire... after which I'll be paying double what I am now...

I'm very curious to see whether people are getting more, or less for their money. I suspect less...

I'll come back to this in a few weeks after people have replied and write up a mini report on where we are now, compared to 2 years ago...

(Need some homework - finished uni in November)

Exactly the same for me. It's $67.95/month, I think.

What I have here in the UK currently:

ISP Name Plusnet
Monthly Charge £24.99 ($57AUD)
Download Limit (Uploads included?) None
Speed of Connection (if known) 8mb (get around 6mb)

According to my ISP stats I have the following usage:
October: 154.62Gb
November: 84.18Gb
December: 62.74Gb - the lack of US TV shows and decent movies is my declining factor I think.

Matilda Internet
$80 monthly which includes phone line rental
Usual ADSL2 speeds
20G on peak 20G off peak downloads only
Shaped separately if either is exceeded (i.e. offpeak shaping only if offpeak >20GB, while onpeak stays OK).

The call costs are quite good, IMHO.

http://www.matilda.net.au/files/Mati...ess%20rate.pdf

Cons: website is site is... well, not as detailed internode. And no dashboard widget for usage.

What I have in my house back in Australia which is being rented by friends at the moment:

Internode
$69.95 ($49.95 without the static IP and AnnexM upload speeds)
10Gb (uploads not counted)
ADSL2+ speeds
I get 7/1 megabit with ADSL1 settings and 5/1.8 megabit using ADSL2+ AnnexM settings where the house is.

If I was living there, I'd have a more expensive plan than that though.

(mumbles that $69.95 is a marketing ploy... and not a trend that needs to be followed. Call it what it is: $70). IMHO ++

I should add that the ISP I work for (not the one I use - I work for cable and it's not in my area) uses traffic shaping daily.

If you are on our 20mb service if you download 3Gb from 4pm > 9pm you get shaped down to 5mb service for 4 hours.

I got my deal as a home worker package that they now sell as shaped however I got it before they did it.

My research into your services are frankly astonishing to my colleagues.

Australia has faster speeds available than the UK - but you limit and cost a lot more.

Ps. It is freezing here... but I'm going to Norway for a quick holiday at the end of January and it's -20 degrees C there at that time... so they have 100mb speeds.
