Gmail IMAP Issues

I've been having trouble sending emails since I've been using Gmail IMAP in Apple Mail 3.0 (Leopard). Whenever I click send I get a pop up that says...

The server “smtp.gmail.com” refused to allow a connection on port 25.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

I've followed the setup process on the Gmail page but this happens every time I try to send an email. I can receive emails no worries.

Did you setup authentication on your outgoing SMTP server for Gmail?

The port number is wrong. IIRC its something like 587. Check in gmail settings on the web for th right port number

I had this exact problem when I was using my in laws' Telstra Bigpond connection. Didn't find a way around it. Worked fine before I left home, worked fine as soon as I got home.

Port 25 with SSL enabled should be fine (Apple Mail sets it to that port when adding a Gmail account to it using its wizard in Leopard).

I don't understand how to use gmail IMAP with mail. I know emails are stored on a server but when I access that folder and try to delete messages in Mail nothing happens. The messages disappear for a while but when I reopen that folder they're back again.
