Vodafone & Optus announce new mobile broadband price cuts
I just received this investment advisory "breaking news". Can't see these plans on the vodafone website yet, but might be the start of a price war.
"Vodafone and Optus have announced aggressive price reductions in mobile broadband. Vodafone, in particular, has announced one of the most aggressive price cuts seen in recent years in the Australian telecoms market (download speed 600kbps-1.5Mbps; 5GB download limit; $39.00/month; free [usually $299] USB modem/express card included on 24 month contract; plan significantly undercuts offers from other operators)."

That Vodafone price sounds very good. Can these USB modems be plugged into a router, or do I have to set up a PC/Mac box to run 24/7 to share my connection?

If your router is a "computer", then yep. Linux box shoudl do the trick if there's drivers for the USB device in Linux.

Wow that's almost as good in value as my cable connection with bigpond (if you look at it in $ per GB)

Offer ends 31 December 2007
Offer is now up on the Vodafone website, valid until 31 December, so if you need it and a 24 month plan sounds attractive:
http://vodafone.com.au/Business/Busi...band/index.htm
Be sure to read ALL the fine print, here's some:
"Vodafone Mobile Broadband operates on our 3G broadband network so you'll enjoy fast downloads within the 3G broadband areas, which cover metropolitan Sydney, Central Coast, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, Adelaide and Perth, plus all major international airports in Australia.
When you venture outside 3G broadband areas, you'll be switched seamlessly onto our GPRS network and you'll only be charged one rate.
Plus, you can use your USB modem in over 70 countries for a flat rate of just 1c/kB, with a 10kB minimum session charge."
Pretty sure I wouldn't be using it overseas. At $10 per MB, it makes that free song download from iTunes a bit less than free.

"Actual charges may vary on your statement as each charge is rounded to the nearest cent before GST is included. Usage over included data is charged at 10c per MB."
Looks like 10 cents per MB for data in Australia. Which is a bit better than $10 per MB for data if you are overseas.

Sadly the free ExpressCard/34 claims to incompatible with Macs. Wonder if it's a H/W or an OS-X drama, or just Vodaphone wishing to remain uncommitted?

Don't then need a USB hub connected to my only 2-USB-port MBP, and who wants something dangling when your laptop's on your knee, anyway??
