I'm sure there are people far more learned than me who can better explain the significance of Google's rumoured plans, but if they came to fruition, I imagine it would create a scenario whereby the likes of Optus, Internode et al. could purchase bandwidth direct from the Google backbone rather than having to deal with Telstra's wholesale prices and then compete with Telstra retail.

I mean the following in the nicest possible way: your comment highlights my reasons for wanting better exposure for Fon. I would have expected someone who is the leader of a very popular technology forum to know about the service, and if you don't, what hope do we have of the public discovering it, creating more nodes, and fostering an alternative to the rather pricey wireless plans from the big boys? There's a reason why the likes of Google, Ebay and Sequoia have invested a chunk of change in the company and it has a real potential to succeed here given the costs of wireless broadband in the major cities...

Me wonders wether the 3g modems for sale now from Vodafone will be able to be used on their 'new expected by christmas 2008' network?

Would almost make it a no-brainer if it was - I imagine that Telstra is not happy, Jan!
