Nine and TEN to transmit FREE tv guide
Quote:
Television body Free TV has announced that Networks Nine and TEN will transmit a free seven-day guide for all digital TV viewers from November 19 2007.
In what is a win for consumers, most digital receivers and PVRs on the market should be able to receive and use the guides.
Initially, Free TV announced that tuners would need to be able to receive and decode encrypted program data. At the time, Free TV was unclear which, if any, of the tuners currently on the market would work with this system.
However, according to news site ITWire, existing digital tuners may require a firmware update to receive the new guides, which may mean returning the device to the manufacturer While two of the three networks begin broadcasts on Monday, the Seven Network is expected to commence from 1 January 2008.
For country viewers, WIN Television has already begun broadcasting its seven-day EPG, with Prime and NBN starting on Monday 19 November and Southern Cross on 26 November.
"This initiative will also accelerate take-up of free-to-view digital television, which given the rate of adoption, is now certainly in more than 30 per cent of Australian homes," Julie Flynn, Free TV CEO, said in a press release.
The release added that although the data is now free, broadcasters still retained their copyright, meaning that court cases such as ICE TV versus the Nine Network could still occur.
Free TV were unavailable for further comment.

Unless they plan to integrate it with applications and set top boxes, IceTV is still superior.

mythtv can already decode the EIB (think thats the name) data in the broadcast, and it populates the tv guide tables (as if it was imported from a provider).
I am sure EyeTV can decode the tv guide from the stream and populate its guide too.

I'm pretty sure its EIT. Mythtv can also mix a XMLTV feed and EIT together, but last I tried this it didn't work out so great

IceTV will probably still be better and until the other networks do the same thing it will remain essential.
You can set individual channels to use the broadcast guide rather than the XMLTV feed. If Ten and Nine's guides turn out to be ok I might start doing this.
I wonder if Ten's guide will reflect the fact that they start every other show fifteen minutes late. You might think I'm kidding but one of the real eye-openers for me since I started using MythTV is just how late most popular shows start. At least when TV shows are available on the Australian iTunes store we'll be able to do away with this kind of idiocy altogether.

I can't believe Aust is so far behind on this one...
doesn't impact on me much though - as despite me buying the top of the line full HD 1080 Sony Bravia X Series...
I was astounded that the "i" button only would do Now and Next! No EPG button on the remote?!?!?!
There is a little book icon - but this feature is "not available on this model"!

Channel Nine Darwin has been broadcasting a guide for a while now, however it's all in capitals and annoys me to tears.
Initially it was the wrong times, as it was going off of AEST, so if you wanted to record the news, you had to set ACA to record.

...and this is the important bit: "it seems there are still no plans to provide the EPG data to any digital recording devices that have an in-built 30 second Skip Button or fast forward speeds of 60x or more".
I suspect the current situation of an unprotected EPG being broadcast is only temporary.

Yeah. The current record is held by 10 as far as I'm aware, at a whopping 55 mins (Big Brother final show last season). They're 15 mins late regularly for Californication.
I haven't heard of an EPG in any country being accurate to the actual showing times, so that's unlikely to change. However, in the US there's laws against sticking to the scheduled times, so the stations don't play the same kind of games they do here.

I believe it is EIT.
I don't think any of us can expect series IDs or any other advanced features from the free EPG.

WIN has been doing 8 day EPG's for a while now. Wonder who scared the Metro's into action ? On boxes that have a decent implementation of the DVB EPG such as a Topfield PVR it's kinda handy. I should also add that DVB EPG data is in the clear. e.g. not encrypted, not protected and there is no mechanism to do and encrypted version and stick to the DVB spec.
I'm not even going to wade into the argument over 30sec skip and really F.FWD as it's just plain stupid talk from some broadcasters who really don't get it.

Oddly enough, using EyeTVs 'Update DVB' function, I've always been able to get ABC and ABC2 as well as one or two of the commercial stations, but now I can get 9 and 10 for today and tomorrow, but ABC seems to have gone!?
Go forward a few days and I have ABC, ABC2, ABCHD, 9, 9HD, 10HD Then later in the week, the ABC and 9 programs seem to disappear. Very, very frustrating that there's a massive lack of consistency. At least it's a start, hopefully it'll settle soon. On a positive note, stuff that's a week ahead still seems to be able to be recorded like the normal 1-day DVB guide.
Edit: I wonder when 7 will move on this? And as far as I can tell, if it becomes more consistent, I can't see a huge need for Ice TV anymore (although setting up stuff via the net/mobile would be handy).
