Preferred I.M. protocol?

So many different ones out there, and yeah it'd be nice to not just jump at the "just use adium" part of the discussion. I'm actually intrigued to see what is the most commonly used im client out of you lot. (well.. more like "more curious about what people use BESIDES MSN" in a large basis") :P

I've used ICQ since its very early days, so it's something that has always stuck.
The great thing with it too is I can use my ICQ account to communicate with both .mac and AIM users.
I also use GoogleTalk at home for people who don't have ICQ/AIM/.mac.

I wouldn't class IRC as IM.

I use Yahoo / AIM / Google Talk.

I had ICQ back when it was a big thing, now its not that big :/

I should find out what my account number was. That'd be convenient to see if those people I added years ago are still there

well.. nor is a carrier pigeon

but yeah.. I mainly use gtalk, but found recently that it doesn't do file transfers (or the least to my knowledge), so instead I use skype when ever that doesn't work out..

I had ICQ back in the day (before the spambots made use of the fact that all you had to do was make a number generator, and you could send messages to everyone on the network).

I changed to MSN back then ('99-'00?). This year I got GTalk too. I'd rather not use MSN, but it has a serious monopoly in Australia, and seemingly 80-90% of people that use IM that I meet use MSN. I use MSN with a non-MSN email address these days.

Gtalk/MSN for me.

I know that AIM is the most popular in the US - but do those of you with AIM accounts have Australian contacts that aren't "power users"?

Same as most of you.

Used ICQ back in the day ('96 til about '99).
Then switched to MSN because everybody was using it (probably because it also came with Windows XP in 2001) - so now I mainly use MSN.

I don't have many who use GoogleTalk, but for those that do, most of them are on my MSN anyway

I have aim / msn / gtalk

Perferred is AIM, although MANY people use MSN, and just have gtalk because I signed up for gmail ages ago, have some people on gtalk, but most of those are on aim / msn anyway.

I use GTalk with an MSN transport in iChat. I haven't used a native MSN client for months (and like to keep it that way). I have multiple MSN transports so that I can always connect to the MSN network but I am trying to get all my mac-using friends to use GTalk with iChat as well.

iChat all the way for me!

I use MSN, but only because it just seems to be so prominent over here.
One day I will set up the Jabber transport thing for MSN with iChat, so then I can just have an AIM client and MSN if needs be.

I think technically Googletalk/Jabber is the best

MSN is most used and AIM works pretty well
