Wandered around Civic with my Touch a few days ago. Found a free spot as mentioned earlier near Country Road. Every other network located seemed to be locked.
The Starbucks ones are locked as far as I am aware, and as it's Telstra I would stay well clear anyway
Where is the City Deli mentioned? That teh one downstairs opposite Supabarn?

Just been to Belconnen Mall to see if Gloria Jeans had an Optus wifi. No luck, but did pick up a couple of very weak signals. Didn't have time to see if I could hunt out a better spot.
Just helping to bump this useful thread.

Thanks for the bump and the intel ozmackem!
I'm still hopeful we get a more exhaustive list going for locals!

just to confirm an earlier post, Gourmet City opposite supabarn and bakers delight in the new part of the Canberra centre has free access after a purchase. There's also an open hotspot in the area called clink that has idstrength signal, maybe from the Dick Smith area.
You can tell I have a few days off work
Forgot to add the coffee is 4 out of 5, and i'm real fussy about my coffee.

Great Thread, maybe we should have a I'll open my wireless to the world day in Canberra so all you new iPod touch owners can wander around.
I'm not located anywhere fun though..
With the increase of residential in some of the town centres WiFi might get better.
thanks for a great thread Jimbo

Thanks for this topic, I'll be checking out a few of the hotspots that people have mentioned!
Just a note - the free hotspot at Pancake Parlour is useless. You can't get any connectivity through it, even if you get them to reset their router. My attempts to contact the provider have been in vain.

I was in Belconnen Mall late yesterday and my PDA picked up a hotspot at Jamaican Blue. I'm guessing they also provide a service to customers, and I'll be checking it out soon (they were closed when I was there yesterday).

Unfortunately, even though there's definitely a hotspot at Jamaican Blue, they state they don't have one. *shrug* I'd say it's for private use only.

The other day I was at City Deli in Canberra Centre just as they were closing. They told me that Muffin Break (right in front of them) also has free wifi, and even gave me their password in case City Deli's didn't work at any stage. How nice of them!
Both of those hotspots are good quality. Unfortunately, the seating's quite uncomfortable, but I'm sure they don't want you hanging around too much....

Thanks for the update alanzeyes...
so am I right in thinking that the three mentions (in OP) might all be in that same new ground floor area of North Quarter?
City Deli / Muffin Break / near Baker's Delight / Superbarn?

If you need a quick fix, park in Ijong St, Braddon. I've got access to 3 open networks at the moment. Most have cable speeds (through Transact)...
Not that I frequent them to often, but what about Starbucks?
