recommend a free online discussion forum

I'd like to create a message board for a small interest group (probably around 100 people). Tried facebook but not many members have it so it didn't get too many posts.

Can anyone recommend a free forum?

PunBB is good: http://punbb.org/
You do need to install it yourself on some web hosting however (not that hard and a good skill to have IMHO)

facebook + myspace + any of those other 'social networking' sites = poo.

I can't stand that crap...

Each to their own though.

Have you looked at those freeboards or something like that?

thanks but too complicated. It looks good - nice and clean, which is what I'm after, but I don't know how to do any of that stuff myself. Just looking for an all inclusive kind of thing. I realise we wouldn't get much out of a free service but if it becomes big enough to justify an upgrade I would be willing to pay a monthly fee.

Theres a few. If you buy a domain name and hosting you would have to upload these ones to the server.
http://www.simplemachines.org/
http://www.phpbb.com/
http://www.yabbforum.com/

Alternatively , if you want someone else to host it and you want a free one and can risk having your domain as a subdomain on someones website. www.mycoolboard.freeboards.com or whatever.

http://www.freeforums.org/
http://www.forumer.com/
http://www.invisionplus.net/

just some ideas

Go with something like PunBB, DON'T use PHPBB2 because it's probably the most exploited forum package around.

I just setup a forum for my University's 3-Semester project using vBulletin, however you have to pay for it.
For free message board, you could myphp. What you need to do is to host it on a server that supports PHP & MySQL. I've installed it on my iMac so I have no problem looking for a server.
