Telstra invests $1.5Billion in new network

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...4/s1906982.htm

So... what's the deal with this? What are the technical details? Is this just a cheap PR grab by Trujillo?

I'm not sure that I understand how this could reduce carbon emissions?

"has the capacity to connect three billion telephone calls in a second." WOW! Gasp! That's worth 1.5 billion right there

"Mr Thodey says the network will have a speed of 92 tetrabytes per second." WHOA that's a lot of porn there guys!

PR stunt. They're investing 1.5bil to keep their business alive, not to make Australia's telecommunications infrastructure more modern - I still can't get the internet connection I want

"Companies able to make massive savings by abandoning interstate flights for meetings, in favour of real-time video conferencing."

I think they're pointing out that emissions will be reduced as business people won't have to fly interstate to conduct meetings...

OK PR people, use those communications degrees and come up with a way we can hitch our coat-tails to the latest fad all the kiddies are talkin' about.

Yeah sure, business people will stop using flights! Just like the paperless office was such a boon for those trees.

That's what my first impressions were. I can see Qantas shares on the rise...

Is this anything new? Or to quote David Letterman, "is this anything?!"

The article is mighty scarce on tech details, but I would've thought that any serious upgrade to Australia's comms infrastructure was going to cost a lot more then 1.5Billion.....

Probably just the estimated cost of the Telstra advertising campaign to try to convince us we're being looked after.
