What is going to populate the digital world?
I am thinking about applications that will populate the digital world. The Qld Govt has an Expression of Interest document out now, due at the end on Jan 06, to build a 100mips fibre optic network to every house in Brisbane, with possible extension to all of SEQ. This is NOT science fiction, they expect the network to begin by the first quarter of 2008 and go to every house in Brisbane.
But, from my point of view, its applications/content/data that make any technology. In this case, and this is just my initial thoughts, I am thinking of a three teir model: free content (think 4zzz, channel 31 4mbs etc); normal (think current isp/paytv/voip) and premium content (think paytv premium).
anyone have any ideas?

Viruses of course, same as now (but they'll be bigger, faster and more bandwidth hungry than today's viruses. Naturally some will have fins...)

Call me outlandish, but I think something like the matrix would be cool... as long as we remain the ones in control...

The Matrix is a bit like second life, or something along those lines. So that, I suppose, would be a sweet application for a "digital world".

I'll give you a little bit more background. This is ultra-high speed broadband, fibre to the home, to every home in Brisbane (slightly less than 1m people, say 275,000 homes ballpark). Its not pie-in-the sky, it will exist by the first quarter next year, and will be rolled out to every home quickly. I am not asking for some sci-fi fantasy, and certainly games will be on this network, but what is the killer ap? the reason that people will buy the service? What types of things are people going to want, eg video download on demand, realtime multi-video conferencing etc?
This is a real opportunity to suggest the NEAR future, what do you think it will be?

Do you have any detail as to how the Govt is funding the roll-out or its stated aims? I'd google, but Im off to bed!
Are they intending to use it for any particular purpose, ie, provide a Govt services kiosk or portal for households in Brisbane? Or is it just to encourage technology adoption, ie the Smart State strategy or whatever they call it?
Are they just providing infrastructure for ISP's, telcos, broadcasters etc to lease. What I'm thinking is are they simply providing todays equivalent of the old phone copper wires with the content and technologies someone elses problem?
Will be interesting to watch what happens.
Edit: Did a google after all - here's a release giving some of the background for interested persons http://www.cabinet.qld.gov.au/MMS/St....aspx?id=48591
Edit 2: And the projects home page http://www.coordinatorgeneral.qld.go...sta/index.shtm
Hopefully this will be a rip-roaring success and convince either the Feds or other States to come to the party. No doubt regional areas miss out though

those are the links to the project.
project vista is brisbane city council only, but there is interest in extending it to all of south east queensland.
the govt proposes that it will be a fully commercial project, ie, no promises even of use by govt, but you have to assume that it (govt, at all levels) will be an early and enthusiastic adopter of the technology. Qld govt see high speed braodband as an 'enabling' technology, driving economic activity in seq.

We've got that shit here in Canberra...it's called TransACT and they had grand plans for it. They are a bit slow keeping with the times (I'm in 1mbit when ther rest of Canberra is kitting out ADSL2) but they have plans to increase the current 55mbit per house to 100mbit per house "Real soon now". It's fibre optic except the last 300 metres or so (or in my case...the last 5 metres....the fibre hangs in my back yard).
So far it's good for internet, TV and VOD. I'm certain the current network is not being utalised to its full potential.

thats the point. people have spent 4 yrs to last december developing this idea, and given no thought to content. Those that have been following my posts would know that I think content has to be king, but its always a chicken and egg arguement. This project is real, but the proponents have adopted the 'field of dreams' approach, if we build it they will come. I don't think they will, I think seeds (of content) have to be planted to show what this technology can do. And I can (or maybe can) do this. I have my own ideas about what can be on the network, I am trying to get to see some of the digerati in Brisvegas (they are all on holidays), but I just want some ideas about real now things that could be done with this network.

frankly, I'm disappointed. 19 people have opinions about lcd/plasma, no-one has any ideas about broadband. I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A WAY TO MAKE A MILLION DOLLARS, I WANT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE SUGGESTIONS TO THE COUNCIL ABOUT THIS PROPOSAL (and I am in a position to do so).

I don't think the key is exclusive content on the network. By just providing very fast internet (100mbit to the home with generous data limits, i.e: 200gb) that's giving you access to the entire internet what more content can you want?
