Webcam for Mac

Are there any basic webcams out there that really work well with Macs/ My iMac is of a generation before they started putting them in the machine. Got given a Logitech one for Christmas that came with software for Mac, but the software wouldn't recognise the camera!! Works fine on my PC but not on the iMac.

WebCams with iMac

There is some software called iChatUSBcam which allows you to use iChat with numerous USB Wecams.

In the past I used this with a Logitech Webcam & it worked well. The software is US 9.95 but not a bad investment if it means getting your otherwise useless Logitech doing some work.

Have a look at http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/

Somewhere on the pages you can see what Cameras it will work with. It will also explain why you need iChatUSBcam.

If you do not use iChat then open source driver macam will get very many USB Web cams going within Mac - for example with Skype.

WebCam Driver for Mac - Open Source

Have a look at;

http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/

Driver macam will get USB webcams going - but iChat needs iChatUSBcam - if you have other needs for your webcam like Skype macam may be all you need. ;-)

Found a freeware site http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/downloads.html for "Macam", have loaded their latest drivers and these do seem to work on Skype, which is what I want to use it for. It is giving me all the right messages. So it looks like I can use the Logitech on the iMac — a good thing as it costs about a quarter of the price of iSight. Thanks again for your input.

Kaiba40,

Sorta in the same boat, what model Logitech did you get?

Have you got it working now in Ichat and Skype?

The model is Logitech QC Messenger, and it does seem to be working okay with Skype, don't use iChat but see no reason why it shouldn't work there too.
