Bigpond and torrents:(
My d/l speeds have reduced dramatically as of 2 days ago. I am now struggling to get over 10kb/s. Is anyone else experiencing this with Bigpond? How can I fix it?
Thanks guys, Dave

Not sure what 'shaped' means, but I haven't even reached half my limit. My plan does not involve peak/off peak d/l limits.

Shaped means just that, when you go over your usage limit and they "shape" the speed to 64k's. Anyway, I think that if after you've reset your router, modem and computer, then it's probably just a dodgy torrent that doesn't have anymore peers. Try getting a really popular torrent and see how quickly it downloads. I've had no issues torrenting with BigPond in the last few days.

This shouldn't become a debate on ISP's but Bigpond is one of the few ISP's that still count uploads as part of your usage.
Try to change your incoming ports to something othet than the torrent defaults
Failing that churn to any number of better ISPs

Alright, I'll find a new popular one. It was just that I was d/l 4 torrents reasonably well, and then suddenly 3 stopped, and the other one can't get over 10kb/s lol.
Thanks guys, Dave

Is this the same as port forwarding? if not, can I just change them in the torrent client (in my case Transmission)? Or do I also have to change them in my router?
Thanks guys!

I'm with internode and seen a slow down of torrents in the past week...(and not alone... it seems that heaps of people in torrent forums are also finding this to be the case) But i thnk the problem is lack of seeders and leechers .. rather than providers.

Yep he means you need to port forward the BT port in your router but the means to pick a new port to actually use. For example, I'm using 43409 as my BT port so I port forwarded that in my router to my local ip address ( www.portforward.com for help there), I then went into the "Firewall" pane of the Sharing section in the System Preferences and added a new rule there for my port 43409.
Then go into Transmission, under preferences you can specify which port to use so you type in the number there too. Give that a shot and see how it goes.
SCREENSHOT OF SHARING PANE: This is after I selected "New" (or New Rule) to type in the Firewall area.

If only I could get half that speed. A dodgey ISP has the rights at my accomodation and we cant get through with any other company. Its a monopoly.
I pay $25 a month for 256k cable. My speed is limited to 15kbps...

If you have a phone line where you are, you could get ADSL. Or, if you're in the area, get something like iBurst - http://www.iburst.com.au or Unwired - http://www.unwired.com.au

I am with Bigpond Cable and regularly get 1mbps + on our torrents...
Some people choose bigpond for reliability and that no other choice if your exchange can't even supply ADSL1
+ you don't want to end up with the thousends on networks like veritas.
