Hi,

I'm looking for a provider for wireless braodband in Sydney. I don't wan't to enter a contract. On the web I've only found Veritel Wireless. Does anybody has experience with this provider? Or can recommend alternatives?

Do I have to buy a special Modem or Card for my Mac (it has this airpor extreme)?

Sorry for this very basic question but new to Mac and new in Australia....

Thanks for your help

hi leonessa,

You can check out Broadband choice to compare what's on offer by various ISPs in Australia. Also, you could read through a discussion thread here on ATAUerss choice of broadband.

Hope that helps.

I use Unwired and find it very good. Good prices and greate helpdesk if you run into trouble. If your thinking of Unwired i can send you a coupon code via PM that will get you a $30 discount on the cost of the modem.

The wireless modem comes in 2 varieties. USB and Ethernet. Ethernet is compatible with your Mac, just plug it in.

Unwired have a page where you can check the address you plan to use the service to see if its in the coverage area. I would guess that the other providers have similar capability to check you have coverage prior to committing.

Cheers,
Chris.

If you do choose Unwired it might be worth checking out the UTS bookshop on the cnr of Broadway and Harris St. They have in the past been selling repacked modems for $70. I bought one last year, but I am unsure if they still do.

Telstra Mobile Broadband. Purchase the Minimax outright for just under $500 and go onto a casual plan. Works perfectly on Mac, there's even an installation guide on this site!

I'm using Unwired in Sydney; 256/64 for 2GB, $39.95 per month, no contract. I'm in the inner west, so there is coverage, but I'm surrounded by large trees on one side of a hill, so coverage is intermittent at times, especially during the evening when others are online. I have to restart the modem many, many times a session when coverage is bad. Really, really effing annoying.

I bought the modem used for about $50, and I imagine I will be able to sell it when I'm done. I won't be using Unwired, or any form of wireless unless absolutely necessary in future, until the technology has improved. I just couldn't justify the cost of a $199 setup fee and $35p/m line rental to get ADSL2+ when I'm not able to sign any length contract.
