Default Not the dreaded iBook logic board fault

I have an iBook g3-800 that I got recently on ebay for a great price, because the screen was not working. This is not the dreaded iBook logic board fault, because the 'puter worked flawlessly with an external monitor. So what is wrong with the screen? Google is no use, I get flooded with how to fix the logic board hints.
(today i pulled it apart and replaced the screen and the hdd, the new/old/replacement screen works a treat, unfortunately i have replaced a perfectly good 30gb drive with a dud 60gb drive, so tomorrow its open it up again and....)
Given that I know its not the GPU, what bit is broken, since I am sure to have a replacement for it amongst all my iBook parts?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Is the ribbon cable torn as it goes through the hinge (multimeter might confirm this), also is the connecter seated correctly and clean?
