Unhappy Leopard seems to have wrecked my Powerbook

I purchased a copy of OSX 10.5.6 yesterday, mainly so I could upgrade to ProTools 8 on my Mac Pro. That all worked flawlessly, couldn't be happier.

Then I decided to update my old 15" Powerbook G4. I had nothing worth backing up so I chose to erase the disc and install Leopard.

The installation seemed to work fine but when I started to work on the computer I was appalled to find that it was terribly slow and kept freezing up. I don't just mean a little bit sluggish, I mean it takes about 5 minutes to open a file, and eventually it just gets the 'spinning rainbow of death' and stops working completely. I repeated the whole process but no improvement.

So it appears that Leopard has ruined my laptop. Any suggestions?

what exact model of power book is it?
is it the Ti (which in it had a 1Ghz chip as top dog)
or the Al (which ran to 1.67Ghz and had DDRII and SATA)

Leopard requires a min of a 1Ghz CPU.

It's the A1046 with a 1.25GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM

I don't know what your friend's box said, but Leopard runs just fine on 867MHz machines.

There is no reason whatsoever why Leopard should run poorly on that Mac. As you said there was no important data on it, I suggest doing a fresh install by choosing "Erase and Install" in Options. (When you choose your Macintosh HD)

It's a good time to have cake or death. Maybe even Inter5tella 5555!

I've erased and installed twice.

It seems okay for the first few minutes after I boot up then just grinds to a halt. It behaves like it's doing something really CPU intensive but I've run activity monitor and (when it finally gets going) there's nothing untoward happening. Not that I can tell anyway, I'm no expert.

At least Leopard seems to have genuinely improved the performance of my Mac Pro, that's something I guess.

Bah, early mondayitis.....

Hummm. Was it operating OK before this, and what OS was running?

Oh, and the install: Does it run smoothly? You do a standard one, yeah?

I know OSX doesn't use product activation or CD keys, but does anyone know if there are some (new) developments with running the same install DVD on the one network? They never have before, but you never know...

Leopard is pretty crap on a G4 in my opinion. Go back to 10.4 (at least temporarily) and if the problems disappear then you'll know it wasn't hardware.

How long have you waited after the installation before getting frustrated with the slowdown? It may just be Spotlight indexing your hard disk. Give it a couple of hours and it may get faster. Also ensure you have run all Software Updates and run Repair Permissions when finished running updates.
