The temptation to buy an MSI Wind and put on Hackintosh is strong.
Very strong.

the MacBook Air is Apple's netbook for now.
maybe we'll see a (rumored) smaller screen version (10" size) in 09, but I have me doubts. can't see Dell taking the crown for the thinnest notebook with the Adamo if they are crowing about this notebook thing >>> >>> Dell Studio XPS 13 leather-wrapped laptop revealed, Adamo info leaked! - Engadget

I am assuming the external drive from my MacBook Air isn't going to work to get this installed?
I am with Decryption, thinking of going down the MSI Wind or the Dell Mini 9 approach

Oh become someone more than just for your-individual-self, buy an OLPC XO -> One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Australia, a low-cost, connected laptop for the world's children's education !!!
![]() Using the Give One Get One program US$399 + shipping$ now opened up to Australia, but for a limited time until Dec. 31st. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I just received mine about a week ago - brilliant uniquely designed tech' - runs Linux, originally a version for children called Sugar, but all sorts of people, all over the world are developing all sorts of software (& hardware) for it, and installing all sorts of other operating systems on them. Beware it is not for the impulse buyer though. Do that, thinking it is a standard NetBook, and you will be disappointed. Read & prepare and get involved in the community -> The OLPC Wiki - OLPC -Hey the entire operating system is open source!- and you will be more than satisfied. You will become part of something much bigger. No I don't work for them, get any income from them, and no i'm not a saleperson for them. I'm sold on them and now passionate since i've messed around with my own alot. See -> Dailymotion - Skills: the right to education, a video from olpcfoundation. OLPC, One Laptop per Child, Laptop, Children, Rights - for example! It has unique wireless-mesh networking tech. that allows it to be simultaneously connected to all the other XO Laptops in a room, and hence for all the children to see at a glance on the networking screen what each of the other children are creating! That Marvell brand wifi chipset functionality is additional to the standard wifi functionality built in (802.11b/g). Do something better (than consume) IMHO. Jase. |

Only $749 (can get it to $699 as I have a relationship with Dell) and has 1280X800 screen res - very important for me. It's the same as the MacBook! Websites aren't gimped. Weighs just 1.2kg. Same HDD as in the MBA, 4200RPM 80GB. Maybe I can upgrade that to an SSD. 6.5hr battery life with the 6-cell battery. I will be looking into this, as I just cashed a cheque for $750 and it is shitting me not having a laptop when we do the podcast and I can't read the notes, or just want something to take with me that's a lot more portable than the MBP. Damn you Pete, damn you!

It seems the Dell Mini 12 is a bit gimped, as you can't install your own RAM. I'll need to look into it further. I don't want one of those pissy 800x600 screens, but I do want something light. Ideal specs for me would be:
Does anyone know what Dell's return policy is like? If I think the Mini 12 is balls and want to return it, what's the time frame, will it be a total pain in the arse and how much will I be out of pocket?

I purchased an ASUS 900HA for $580 the other week for my better half. Am now thinking of returning it and getting the MSI U100 from msy for the same price..

Would recommend against the Dell, mini 9 OR 12. The chart is misleading. Yes, the BT wifi etc work but there are important flaws. Most notable is the sleep function will no longer work (will cause a kernel panic on the mini 9, the audio will stop working on the min 12), hangs at start up ,audio issues and graphics redraw issues. Also you can only get 1GB on board. (?void warranty to install 2GB). There are workarounds( eg replacing SSD, but still some issues with that too)
More info on all the Dell issues here: MyDellMini • What works, what does not I bit the bullet and bought a MSI Wind. There is a customised installer for mac os x freely available on bittorrent, and it really was headache free. When i bought in october, there were no drivers for the built in wifi, so I bought an apple MiniPCI card and it works natively with no issues. Nowadays RALINK have provided a macosx driver for the built in card, so you don't have to even replace the card (though you have to use their application to activate/deactivate the card which is a pain). The wind works like a real mac machine, the only thing that does not work are the microphone and audio in & out ports, which is easily rectified with a USB sound dongle ($10). And obviously it's not a multitouch trackpad. If you want a netbook with MAC OS X the msi wind is the most headache free way to go. Decryption,
the mSI wind u100 fits all of your specs except: * 3G HSDPA modem built in - available in the version due next year. More here: Hands-On With the MSI Wind U120, Specs Now Official * 32GB of fast SSD storage - the HD is easily replaceable so you could do this yourself, but it does come with a 120GB 2.5 standard HD * 1280x800 - 1024 x 600 instead. I don't know of any other than the Dell 12 that have the 1200 x 800, but if you've seen my post in the thread there are *serious* reasons why the dell 12 is not a good option. I was interested until I found out about the sleep issues. * Atom Z530/Z540 (1.6ghz/1.8ghz) CPU * 2GB RAM - upgrade yourself or there are many places that will do this so you can keep your warranty, eg: TECS Computer Megastore * Under $800 - well under at $620 with 2GB ram With the 6 cell battery I get 4.5 -5 hours battery life. |
