How to start podcasting
I want to start podcasting. What are some recommendations on cheap USB mics and what software to use to record it?

if you do a search there are a few articles on this, main thing is early you don't have to go nuts.
10 Tips for a Starting a Podcast
A USB headest and Mic will do. Depending of what you are recording (iChat or Skype) you may or may not need to get some software.
We do Ozracingwrap over Skype now and I use Ubercaster άbercaster but Garageband is very much an option (but won't record skype and only will grab ichat).

For Skype recording I use CallRecorder, that works great. I'll checkout the others. How about promotion and distribution?

For distribution you normally have a blog associated with the podcast that you publish each episode to, and hence, an item in a feed is generated that people subscribe to. You can then also submit your podcast to iTunes.
How to get an audience however - I have no idea. It depends what the topic is really. With the MacTalk podcast I was lucky as we have a built in audience with the site which was already established.
Good luck with the podcast, I like seeing MacTalkers podcasting, there's a couple of us here doing it! Ask any questions if you got em

We use Libsyn for our hosting at $5 a month (we only do one show a month. They take care of the RSS etc and bandwith (which could kill you otherwise) libsyn // podcasting made easy
You can submit the podcast to iTunes (look for submit a podcast under podcasting).
Promote on here but really as Decryption says no set way to do it short of advertising (we used google adwords for couple of months).
Also plenty of podcasting books around that are worth a look.
What is the show about?

We tried Ad-words with the WineWeek show for a month or so. It didn't generate a lot of traffic at all for us.
The killer traffic booster is getting onto one of the three promo spots on the iTunes Podcast directory... but Apple choose that without any intervention from the podcasters - you can't beg or buy those spots, but they are GOLD for traffic.
In other news, WineWeek has been picked up by adikted.tv (beta) now, a Cnet backed Aussie video network. Full quality widescreen now!

Ooh nice - I didn't know about this. It's good to have a central place for Aussie content. All these American podcasts are wearing thin, haha

I bought a Samson USB mic for $199 and a pop filter for $20. For recording and editing I use Audacity and it costs nothing. Libsyn does my hosting and costs $5 a month. More info about how I made my podcast is here.
Welcome to the podcasting club!

I prefer mics with mini-jacks (as I use the mic also with my PC), so I use a Sony dynamic micrphone (F-V420), a MDR-110LP headphone for monitoring and Garageband '08
