Who here uses engineering paper?

If you've used it, you'll know what I'm talking about - it's like the graph paper that most people used in high school, but it has a much chunkier grid.

This is what I'm talking about:

Who here uses it? It has occurred to me that it would be immensely useful for software development, not just traditional "engineering" work. Does anyone know where you can get nice engineering paper notebooks?

Ive got a big notebook of this paper on my desk. It is useful for drawing alot of things from cartoons to quick UML diagrams.

EDIT: It's 160 Page Pukka Pad squared notebook (i dont know if thats same as engineering paper) but i got from K-Mart.

I haven't used that sort of paper since Physics practicals in undergraduate. Maybe a scientific and technical bookstore might carry it? Otherwise I know my dad has a program that generates him graph paper, I can ask him what it is and you can print some out if you are desperate....

Forgie,
Most stationary suppliers should still have it in A4 pads or spiral bound books.

It used to be universally used by engineers and draftsmen, but nowadays CAD has replaced it for other than preliminary sketches, charts are done with spreadsheet software like Excel, and bar chart programmes now use software like SureTrak or MS Project (Merlin for Mac).

But very handy to have a grid on the page for lots of things, I guess.
I rarely use it now, but design engineers use it quite a lot to draft up small designs or changes, sometimes distributed as is, or then passed on to a CAD draftsman.

I find that for jotting out ideas, I'm better off with a pencil and notepad then virtually any existing computer based tool. Especially for anything visual, or anything that I can conceive of in a visual manner.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm after a large notepad, preferably of high quality, for a "design journal" sort of thing.

-Hmmm. A bit slow with my reply. Sorry

Great idea Forgie!

I think I want something like this too! Will have to buy a nice A4 book of engineering paper soon.

What size are you after? A5? A4? A3?

A4. I was inspired by Revolution in The Valley, where a lot of the old Macintosh UI and code design was done on this sort of paper. It sort of clicked - hey, I can do both text and diagrams, and they will both look good! I've actually already got some, but it's a shitty "pad style" book with tear-off-glue binding at the top, and my uni logo in the corner. I want something with a nice solid cover to it.

I use an A3 layout pad (like tracing paper) with a sheet of chunky grid underneath for reference.
Works a treat and you can get multiple layers for revisions of designs.

I also use the grid of dots style graph paper quite a bit.

An engineering company i used to work for made their own.

Take a sheed of A4 paper, print the grid on the back (5mm square) and the drawing border and title block on the front.

They made them this way so the final drawing could be copied without the grid showing.
