NAS box for home....

So I've been thinking about this.. I've got a shitload of stuff backed up on DVD and would rather have backed up on hdd... So I thought why not I make a NAS.. has anyone here made one for home? or bought a pre-made NAS box? Would be really interested in getting this going, as discs are starting to scratch up real bad :|

The Taurus LAN is an entry level RAID Enclosure:

As is the SOHOTANK SL3620-2S-LB2 LAN Enclosure:

Click the image to open in full size.

The main difference being that the Taurus LAN isn't hot swappable, where as the SOHOTANK SL3620-2S-LB2 is.

See Article here in MT, in case it passed you by...

Both models above are 10/100/1000 Base-T.

all kinds of possibilities

cheers,

cw

Just be sure to hang on to those DVDs. They're guaranteed to outlast the HDDs (or any magnetic medium) by a long shot, provided they aren't stored in extreme conditions and you bought quality blanks and avoided RWs.

Cheers
Steffen.

Hi Clockwork

I'm also looking into a NAS, after toying around with the idea of Windows Home Server, I'm wondering if a NAS unit would better serve my needs.
First and foremost I want to move all my movie collection off the imac and on to storage but also need the ability to stream this media to the PS3, will one of these NAS boxes do this.
I also would like to centralize my itunes libraries as my 2 children have there own mac's and we have a lot of double up's. My last requirement would be for the children only to access certain folders on the devise as there is some R18 movies in the collection that the children are too young to watch.

Cheers

Qnap make some cheap & cheerful stuff. Very full featured, will take 5 drives and only set you back ~$600 (sans drives). Runs Linux and has all sorts of goodies built in (BitTorrent server and full LAMP server for starters).

QNAP Systems, Inc.- NAS storage and Surveillance products provider

The TS-409 and 4x 1TB HDDs is on my list of things to buy
decryption is online now
