Masked Lapwing
Plovers... took this one a few weeks back, she was guarding her nest at the time, in my neighbour's back yard.

I don't want to get on your arse about this, but there is no photo 'uploader' that I can see - only a button that asks for a photo URL. That means I have to supply the larger photo and a thumbnail size photo to use as an image placeholder/link.
If i were using flickr etc I guess that would give me a 'embed' block of code (like youtube?) that includes all that stuff. (I'm not, the photo is just on my web host, so there's no other way to do that)
My suggestion : Implement a mechanism for a user to upload an image from their computer OR a URL, and then resize that on the server using imagemagick or whatever, then insert little 'galleries' into posts with a thumnail-sized image preview that, when clicked, loads the full image (but not so that the browser goes to that image and the user has to click 'back' to get back to the thread, and also so that the user doesn't have to go to a new window)
Maybe something like this is in the works for mactalk 2.0..?
This would also have the added benefit of making images inserted into post carry a 'Height="x" Width="y"" parameter, which would mean that I could scroll through the thread as the images load, as the browser renders placeholders. As it is now, the page jumps around each time a portion of an image loads, which means I have to wait for the entire thread to load before I can actually easily view the pics.

This business of MTAU pages with lots of images loading slowly has always been an issue, not only in the photography threads, but also in the "Post Your Desktop" and "Post Your Setup" threads. Regardless of how people upload their images, the best (perhaps only) thing one can do for now is to remind others to keep their thumbnails no wider than 800 pixels and their file size under 100 KB. Also, thumbnails should not be submitted as pngs generally. It's very easy to do with Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature and for those who do not have Photoshop, GraphicConverter, a shareware app downloadable at macupdate.com, does the job nicely as well (among other free/shareware apps.)
For all concerned, take this post for example:
http://forums.mactalk.com.au/589520-post454.html
The image is 800 pixels wide, 84 KB and there's a link to enlarge it.

ive recently discovered RAW as well. i always knew about it and how you have 'lots more editing potential' but after doing a photoshoot purely in RAW, ive realised that it gives you a lot more scope for the BASIC tweaks as well, (i.e. lightning shadows before noise and distortino comes into play)

I'm sure any of the WA residents here will be able to work out in a flash where I've been this weekend...
This photo in particular was great to capture, you'll need sharp eyes to see why though!
And this is the location give away shot

Any chance that is a Quokka? I have heard of Quokka Soccer and Rottnest Island, my mates from Magellan GPS (when I worked there) used to tell me about it / them on my Perth trips. Cool looking little fella... I hope they really did not play soccer with them!
