Default MBP fans dead...

Hi folks!

Well my MBP was making some buzzing sounds for a while and not it's gone all quiet. Checked the system stats and the fans sitting at a nice 0 rpm.

I was wondering if it's difficult to change the fans by myself. Warranty has exipred. If not then could anyone recommend a place in Sydney where I can get this fixed.

Thanks!

Your local repairer/reseller will be able to do it for you. Frequency are always highly recommended

If you have pulled apart a laptop before it wouldn't be too hard to do it yourself but not sure it would be much cheaper/easier in the end

Thanks iSlayer!

I've never pulled a laptop apart before. I've built PC's and pulled cars apart before but this is something new.

My laptop crashes from time to time and I've also noticed a resonable slow down in performance of my MBP. Could this be related to the dead fans?

hard to say. Could be because of the fans or could be the signs of a bigger problem or could simply be software issues

Cheers mate! I'll probably try a format and re-install once I get the fans fixed.

Better to be self reliant.
powerbookmedic.com sells fans.
And intel CPU's will underclock themselves when overheating so yes performance will be affected.

Yep they do but that may not be the performance issue. Under load i think they still run at high speed no matter what the temp.
Definitely wouldnt advise using the mbp with dead fans. I've seen a mbp get upto 100º before with a dead fan.

For a temporary fix, try blasting the fan with a can of compressed air. This should clean out the crud and give it a kick start.

The fans shouldn't be failing so early in the MBP's life - do you work with it in a dusty environment?

Hi Byrd,

I don't work in a dusty environment. It started playing up since I got my laptop back. The hard drive died and went in for a replacement. Ever since I got it back the fan started making a small noise that grew louder and louder and eventually just stopped.

I'll give the compressed air a go.

Thanks!

Maybe the tech damaged it during the previous repair. Take it back to the place that put the HDD in and get them to have a look for you.

Thats exactly what mine did before 1 of them died. There did seem to be alot of fan issues on some of the earlier mbp's

No not true at all, intel has throttling technology to prevent the CPU from overheating. When it gets to 100C, the CPU will drop clock cycles, as many as are needed. (note, not the same at running at lower mhz, it blocks, or as the terminology goes, gates the CPU cycles rather than reducing mhz) At 125C the computer will automatically turn off. Provided the computer is compliant with these intel's specifications the computer will not be damaged from overheating. Although it won't work properly. But these days it's just insanity to design a CPU without proper thermal management.
So yes, overheating causes poor performance. Symptoms you will see when overheating, is temps in the upper 90's and a decrease in performance. And higher chance of crashing.
