DVD ripping

Let me start by saying: Yes, this IS legal, I just want to backup my DVDs. Nothing Else!!! No piracy...

ANYWAY, I want to get the actual film off my DVD onto my hard drive. I've looked through these forums and found multiple threads on DVD ripping, nothing worked. At first, Handbrake looked like the ULTIMATE solution, but after a while I realised that full feature length films when being ripped on handbrake crashed the program. Right at the end. It crashed repeadedly... over and over again.

Secondly, after Handbrake, I tried MacTheRipper. It was great... but it ripped in incomprehensible VOB files that could only be read with VLC.

Then after reading another thread, DVDBackup seemed like the perfect solution. Until the download page didn't let me download it. When I finally downloaded it, it was a .sitx file. My mac can't read .sit or .sitx files.

So I want a DVD ripping software that won't crash, that won't export in VOB and that I can download easily. It should export in anything that could be read by Quicktime. Please help!

I haven't had much luck with Handbrake either - always crashes well before completing the task.

DVDBackup is quite old and doesn't work for a lot of newer DVDs. If it did, it would also produce VOB files.

I'd be keen to find an alternative program too.

Personally I have had no problem with handbrake...

but you might want to try mactheripper... and then handbrake that file...
to get the format you want.

OK! To read .sit/sitx files, download http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html - It's Stuffit and it works well.

What version of MacTheRipper did you use? My version has never failed and works perfectly with Quicktime. I never use anything else.

I'm trying handbraking the MacTheRipper file. Will tell if it will work later... usually takes a while. Thanks, tintin and kuma (and wheels!!! I already posted this before I read your post...)

That's what I do when I want to convert a DVD to my iPod for example - MacTheRipper removed all the encryption/UOPs crap from the DVD and HandBrake just simply changed the file type of the exported encyption free DVD. BTW, DVD2OneX is a great program for shrinking the exported DVD file to a standard 4.7GB disk if you don't have a Dual Layer Burner and stays at a very good quality. Of course if you already have Roxio Toast, then this does it too!

Umm... in regards to "What version of MacTheRipper" It is 2.6.6 (according to the lower left hand corner... is that the version?) and I do not know how to export directly into quicktime from MacTheRipper.

Do you have to buy Roxio Toast? What is it! what does it do?

Thanks,
Domzo!

BTW - backing up DVDs (assuming you mean ones you've bought, not ones you've made of your own movies) is illegal. There's no provision in the law for making personal backups of commercially produced DVDs.

Mac the Ripper, DVD2OneX, Popcorn.

No Problems with over 100 DVD's burned, with only two Coasters, which were my own fault anyway.

Edit: Re-Read original Post. Just try with MacTheRipper, and then use Hand-Brake to master the Video_TS folder.

Good Luck.

'The Unarchiver' does a great job of uncompressing also. Iprefer it to the OS8 style stuffit.

Also been having problems with newer dvds and dvd backup, and handbrake crashes.

Thanks for the mactheripper->handbrake tip. I'll try it on the weekend.

Didn't that little bit change since Johnny the Turd put us in the FTA with the US? The whole 'fair use' bit is now so confused I have no idea what's legal and what isn't.

As for Handbrake I found that it has problems on Intel machines but is OK on PowerPC ones. Anyone else notice this?

Rip your DVD with whatever app you want - I'd then use DVD2oneX to make it just the movie (get rid of the menus etc). Once completed use MPEG Streamclip - http://www.squared5.com - open it up, drop all the vobs in the VIDEO_TS folder in - say yes to open all files - and then export to what you want - these files should play in quicktime / vlc etc. Can also re-burnt as a dvd. I normally export to MPEG2!

i always used to use fastdvdcopy to get a copy of a normal 6+gb disc to fit on a 4.7gb disc.
but if you just want to backup to hard drive you can use mactheripper, then play the backed up folder in apples own DVD Player by choosing file-open disc location (from memory) and then browsing to the VIDEO_TS folder of the dvd on the hard drive.

Woh... so much help!

Well it finally finished on handbrake. Until it crashed AGAIN right at the end. Yes, this was off the ripped MacTheRipper VIDEO_TS file.

I'm gonna try MPEG Streamclip now... but gehenna is right! That's cool how I can watch DVD's without a disk.

Thanks again!
