They have that functionality in photoshop?

I'll take a photo of something when I get home and post it to show how well (or badly) it works.

probably would have used indesign to produce something like this. its faster and easier to use when creating a page with images and some text... and of course a lot smaller file size.

This is 'Colour Accent' mode on my Canon IXUS 850 IS. The first in each pair is normal colour, the second is where one colour is highlighted., and the rest of the image rendered in B&W.

Well, I am sorry for taking the piss... I actually thought you were taking the piss! I didn't know camera's had that functionality! Me thinks you could do a far better job in Photoshop still!

Neither of them yielded a useful result. Are there parameters you can tweak?

Cheers
Steffen.

I tend to use the Vivid colour setting on my Ixus - produces beautiful bright, but not unnatural colours.

That was probably due to my hasty and inappropriate choice of subject matter. The way it is supposed to work (I think) is that you focus on one part of the image, and select its colour as the colour to use. Any part of the whole image that matches that colour should be rendered in full colour, and the rest of the image in B&W.

In my experience, it has problems differentiating between green and yellow, and when parts of an object have different apparent colour due to light & shadows, it thinks they're different colours, and so the object will be part B&W, part colour.

Having said that, maybe I'm not using it properly. As I said earlier, I thought it was a gimmick until I saw a similar (better) effect obtained using Photoshop.

I took this at Thorndon Park near Newton in the North-Eastern suburbs of Adelaide on the weekend, it's an old reservoir that's been transformed into a nice picnic and BBQ spot.

It's a stitch up of two pictures. Enjoy!

I like this photo. What is in the foreground? Some sort of musical instrument like a sax?

Thanks! It's my beloved clarinet! In the background is a studio monitor (bought from MT!) and a set of cheap studio headphone.

There is another image like this in the Part 2 thread or here on Flickr:
