Default iinet free zone question

Does anyone know whether you must access the iinet freezone from within their homepage for content to be quota free, or whether you can enter the free zone sites independently of the iinet home page? We seem to be using more quota than expected ... (and yes I am aware my uploads count too as we're on a naked DSL plan)

check the url

when u go through the iinet, it may have a 'referral' url which is different to going to the site directly.

You should be able to do it independently.

I think you can go straight to the sites in the freezone and they still don't count towards the quota.

I find that all of my iTunes goes into Freezone, except for podcasts.

Software updates are sometimes freezone, sometimes quota.

I am pretty sure when I downloaded iWork '08 trial (dmg) it went towards my freezone too. Via HTTP download.

And same as leon, sometimes Software Update, sometimes not.

I had an issue with my iTunes going against my usage. They suggested that whilst most of the time going direct will work for safety you should follow the Freeszone URL. I did point out, but no real acknowledgement, that you can't go via Freeszone via your Apple TV.

There was some issue last month with them not picking up the iTunes stuff as free.

So you've had problems with iiNet counting your AppleTV downloads against quota? I'm about to go with iiNet at my new house specifically so I can rent HD movies via AppleTV without it counting against quota. If that's not the case then I'm going to have to rethink it.

edit: I should clarify I'm talking about the US store. iiNet reps on whingepool are pretty careful to disclaim the US store as falling under the freezone, but I seem to recall plenty of people saying they'd downloaded from the US store without it counting against quota.

Thanks for the thoughts... clear as mud! How do I check where my downloads are going?

Check under Account Tools > Volume Usage. It will appear in green (free).

Yes, I've used that usage meter. What I'm after is a way of seeing download IP addresses so I know where exactly the downloads are going. Now that I think about it, they probably can't do that for privacy reasons.. can I do it from my end somehow?

Some content may be Akamai hosted (i.e. hosted on servers all over the world to speed up content delivery) like Microsoft patches and movie trailers.

Wouldn't surprise me if other high bandwidth content was also cached locally by Akamai.

ufnortunately from my understanding it's not possible to always block out certian akamai servers (some may be peered with your ISP, others might not be) so unless you enter said zone from a link or web page your ISP administers (which is probably IP driven) you might be getting the content from anywhere.

Such is a decentralised load balanced network.

Not too sure about identifying the IP addresses but you can look at an hourly meter in the tool box for a particular day. That way you can check where your usage is going if you know when you've downloaded from certain sites.
