Default suggestions for beginning photography book?

Besides a very brief photography lesson in high school art class (which I have mostly forgotten anyway), i'm into photography but don't know much at all about it. When I travel look for the nearest tourist with the biggest camera did and follow them around taking the same shots as them (I've actually ended up with some good shots). But I'd like to learn some real photography skills. And I know there;s a lot of MacTalkers who are great photographers, so does anyone have suggestions for a good book to start with? Thanks in advance

For digital and for utter simplict you cant go past Amazon.com: The Digital Photography Book: Scott Kelby: Books

its a small book which addresses the simple questions like if I want to take a flower what settings might I use, then explains how you might go about it and so forth.

I haven't seen that actual book but, from experience, anything by Scott Kelby is pretty good. Also look for books by John Hedgecoe and Michael Langford...

Every budding photographer needs to read/own Understanding Exposure, above. Even Scott Kelby in his Digital Photography book recommends it. Kelby's follow up book

Amazon.com: The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2: Scott Kelby: Books

is also worth getting, has some more advanced topics in the same simple format.

I can also highly recommend Scott Kelby's books. He has a great way of writing, and I own a number of his books.

I think it's a dashed good idea to start at the beginning of a subject one knows only bits and pieces about. A good basic start is Macquarie Community College.

I took a level 1 lesson for two days for around $150, and though I have a background in photography, it was a really good course and the tutor was particularly talented and methodical.

If you go down this track, keep an eye out for a Dr Zen Loy.
An excellent teacher of digital photography, from the very quintessential basics, to the advanced.

I have both the old one as well as the revised edition, both very similar books and both very good reading.
