Ain't that the truth. The only time I went there was October 2000 when I lived in the UK (pre 9/11). Since I have dual citizenship (UK and Aus) I travelled on the UK passport because it meant I didn't require a visa (this has now changed). I was questioned aggressively about why a UK passport was issued from Canberra. Even though they finally let me through after I explained the concept of being a citizen of two countries I suspect it was only because they couldn't actually prove that it was illegal.
In contrast the Aus and UK customs have been courteous, good humoured and open about why I was being searched.

Until you've cleared customs they unfortunately have every right.
Well, perhaps a lot more accurately, you have no rights until you've cleared customs and enter the country. Until then you're not protected by any 'rights' at all.

Dont get me started on customs. In 06 I was flying out of heathrow the day they locked it down coz of the threat of a terrorist attack. Anyhoot I saw some fucked up shit with customs and people that where or looked middle easten, they are a law in them self. But I still can not see how illegal music can be a threat to there country.

Ergh.
Anyway, chances are they won't. They need to have proof you did anyway, and who is going to waste time going through peoples laptops?
I guess its good measure to have filevault on anyway but still.

I've been through US customs earlier in the year and there was no search of any of my carry-on gear actually! I had a sticker on my checked luggage saying it had been checked and cleared but the rest was just a matter of getting stamps on documents and leaving the airport - no other baggage checks at all.... unlike Australian customs!

Hmm in and out of the USA my baggage was never even looked at, even though I had a whole electric guitar within the bag!
I recall having to power up my laptop - but it was more to prove that it's actually a laptop and not just a bomb shaped like a laptop. At least that's the impression I got. They were happy with seeing a log-in screen.

I heard a story when the MBair was released that a guy was pulled over going through US customs... because the laptop didn't have an optical drive they believed it to be a fake - just a laptop-esque case with a bomb in it... they asked him to power it up and even called Apple to verify! Haha

Customs Could Search Your iPods For Pirated Music - Gizmodo Australia
Basically US customs can search your Ipod and laptops for pirated material. I plan to bring my laptop to the US but have some illegally downloaded music on it. (I download, if I love, I buy; otherwise I don't. I can't afford to buy everything - only 16).
Do any frequent flyers know if these checks are done on everyone, and are a normal thing that happens, or are they rare? Should I delete all the stuff before I go?
Thanks for your help. I hope I'm aloud to talk about this on MT. If not could someone tell me and I'll filter it a little.

lololololololol.
How are they going to know if its pirated or not?

I put the laptop through the xray machine in frankfurt airport and everything was fine then a man comes over asks me to go into a separate room with him and to specifically bring my laptop-weird I thought. Anyway I was a little concerned because I fly around a lot and I know how airport security is nothing short of a joke and most "officers" are on a massive power trip. The man asks me to open it up then he pulls out some sort of electronic sniffer device and waves it all over the laptop - looking for drugs, gun powder I don't bloody know. Nothing registered so he thanks me and send me on my way. It was just really strange and unnerving to be so thoroughly checked out for no good reason.
In general I hate customs and airport security the US is the worst and probably the most unwelcoming arrival into a foreign country you can ever expect. Sad because once you get out of the airport most people around the world are pretty decent human beings.

US customs are officious to the max and absolutely ridiculous (love the genocide question on the incoming passenger card!). I don't know how people can complain about Aus customs when the US and UK customs officers are so bad.
|
US customs can be pretty brutal, but having a Canadian passport gets me around pretty easily compared to others without...though things are changing for Canadians soon I'm sure. As for AUS customs...sigh, let's just say you guys are lucky having an Australian passport. I get searched every single freaking time. And when a random spot check (even leaving Australia) is in place, I somehow always get picked. I'm an innocent looking and friendly Asian! very innocent...
But customs aside, nothing beats the Australia-only spray down welcome on the plane
