If you open Console.app (in Applications/Utilities) do you get any more specific information about the error showing up when it occurs?

The simplest solution will be to format (erase) your Time Machine HD and start again from scratch. However, you might want to boot from your computer's install DVD and run Disk Utility (available in one of the menus) over your hard drive first.

ok first i looked into console.app and found nothing related to time machine. secondly i inserted leopard dvd to check the drive and says appears to be okay

So now i want to format and erase my time machine hd but i have some music my itunes library and videos saved on that drive and i wanna keep them and i try to copy back to hd but i get this message

You cannot copy (folder name) to this destination because its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination. except for the case of some characters .

I even try and save itunes libary to my ipod and i get the same message even after i restored it .
