I been reading it and looking at the diagrams...
this seems to be the key

The user will grab the shell, reflecting the light to the sensor inside. Then, the software will interpret the user gestures and act accordingly.

If it's all touch-enabled... Would you hold it? Or use it in a sort of pincer grip, moving your fingertips over the mouse as it sits, immobilised, on the mousepad? How baffling!

So is this patent by apple?
I just can't understand how one would use this but i mean if you would be using it all day wouldn't you need a larger surface to move your fingers around like maybe a flat surface?

well it is reported as an Apple patent..
but I agree a larger flat surface would have seemed more logical...

Do scroll wheels need to be as big as the mouse?
I think you'll find it's just a new way of incorporating the traditional scroll wheel/s and extra buttons into the mouse.

i love all the comments on gizmondo about it...here bloody here, apple should be integrating a two-button solution in all their hardware products.
two finger tapping is a half-assed solution to a problem apple has been too stubborn to face for a long time now.

Wouldn't it work just like the iPhone's screen, but on a mouse-like shape? You would click anywhere on the shell to make a normal click, run your finger(s) down the shell to scroll, etc etc?
Sounds pretty cool to me.

Dunno, I can see a whole lot of RSI coming out of this idea. I think it's just an attempt to secure the design to prevent others from easily entering the market. Multitouch is a good idea for a screen, but a lousy idea for a mouse.

I love two finger tap and think it's better than two buttons... it gives you a much larger click area and doesn't have right handed/left handed issues.
This mouse looks really interesting!

I think you're onto something -- the MightyMouse is a finicky creature, this would be even more so.

... but excellent for a trackpad! That's why I started this poll five days ago. Go vote

I'm guessing that you'd be able to do the pinching actions on the surface of the mouse to control on-screen zooming as well. I agree with Goodbye - you'd probably be able to run your finger over the decices to scroll (easy 360-degree control).
Maybe you'll be able to place your fingers on different sections of the mouse, in a particular pattern, to initate shortcuts?
The possibilities are pretty endless
