I've been playing around with iPhoto 5 for a few days now..... and while the book look nice, apple seriously need to release an update because they are buggy as all hell.
At the moment they are only available in Japan, the U.S., Canada and Europe (iTMS countries so far I believe), but hopefully it'll arrive here soon.

since Apple will be opening a store in Melb and Sydney soon, maybe then can we hope to get this service, as well as the (overly-long) awaited iTMS.

I don't think they're coming any time soon. If you check out the iLife pages on Apple's US and Australian sites you will see that there are no references to the books on the Australian site, but they feature prominently on the US site.

Australia isn't part of Apple's world map. Only Europe and the States are.
Right now I am craving them. I want them sooo bad.

There was a method of accessing the photo album service in the United States detailed in January's Australian Macworld. Anyone (besides Matthew JC. Powell!) tried it?

Oh yes. The next time Apple says 'Worldwide' its mostly US, followed by Japan and Europe"
"Apple have Flagship stores 'Worldwide' "
"The iTunes music store is available 'Worldwide' "
"The Photo Books are available 'Worldwide' starting day 1"

The correct iPhoto Books link is here: http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/books/
They allow you to choose a theme and then easily make your own layout. Really powerful stuff, opening good design up to everybody! You should watch the Macworld Keynote for a demonstration of the new apps.

If you really want to get a book you could try shutterfly ( http://www.shutterfly.com/photobooks/info.jsp). I'm fairly sure the book s will be similar but you can't use iPhoto - you need to use their browser based app which works fine with Macs. They will ship anywhere I believe.
I have relatives in the states which I'm going to use for genuine iphoto books. The Matthew Powell thing is that he uses a postal rediretion service to get it here.
If, however Apple close the loophole which allows the use of an Australian Credit Card on the US site, you would then need a US friend's credit card to pay for it.
cheers
