iMac - Should I buy or should I wait?
I would appreciate some advice.
I am embarrased to say that my last Mac was an SE20. After too many years of Windows frustration, I have finally decided to return to the fold and I am ready to buy. The thing that put me over the edge is the absolute mess that is VISTA.
I want to buy an iMac (20 inch) but I am concerned that a major upgrade may occur in the near future - particularly given the length of time since the last upgrade.
Do you think that it is worth waiting? Is there any speculation as to when an upgrade will occur?
I would prefer to buy now, but if it makes sense to wait I guess I can handle a few more months of hell. Perhaps I should at least wait to Leopard comes out.
Cheers,
Craig

Don't wait - if you need it now, get it now. Otherwise, you will be forever waiting for the next little tweak.

if you wait for leopard you will pay a premium as old stock will not be loaded with the new OS & your really only missing out on time with a new computer

The only thing that may massively change in the near future is the enclosure (and the price may drop slightly). The most that will be upgraded internally is a shift to Santa Rosa, a FSB of 800MHz and speeds of 2.2 and 2.4GHz - which is not a huge leap away from what is currently availble.
My gut feeling is that any changes that might come will either come at the end of June or in September/October.
It really depends on the urgency of your need for a new computer - if you need it now, buy it now and don't look back because there's always going to be something new and better in the offing. If you can wait a few months without one, then don't wait longer than October.
And what bushfire said is not true - if you do wait for Leopard, or buy within a month of its release, chances are that you will be provided with upgrade disks either free of charge or for a nominal ($20-30ish) fee. But as he stated, you won't have had a computer for x number of months either.

Buy now. If you want to save some money - and make an iMac feel like an even better deal that it already is - look at a refurbished machine such as this. Then, when the inevitable update occurs, you won't take so much of a hit.

If you can wait a bit longer, wait. According to MacRumors' Buyer's Guide it's way overdue for a refresh.

Excuse me, what is said i know to be true, because it was my personal experience, when tiger was released. i bought a new mac on the day of release for tiger. As it was new old stock i did not get preloaded tiger I had to pay and wait a month for a mail out upgrade. So it is fact.

Next Byte had 20 of this spec machine going a month ago @ $1799 $200 cheaper than from apple.
Shop around.

It's due for a refresh, but how long. No one knows. I just ordered a current model iMac 20" with 256mb vram. Will drop in 3rd party 2gb of ram when it comes. I am sure I could of waited, but time wasn't on my side. As they say, if you need a machine, then buy it. I won't be upgrading it when new model comes out, makes no sense. Will be sure to get my moneys worth by using it for atleast 2 years.

I bought a new Mac on the day Tiger was released, and it was pre-loaded with Tiger.
Most resellers already have the upgrade disks on release and slip them in the box for any Macs sold from that day on.
Sounds like you got shortchanged.

I am in the market for a new imac as well.
I've been following the 'rumour mill' for some time now and from what I've seen the current 'expected' update is around the end of June (new enclosure, speed bump, etc). That isn't that far away, so I figure I'll hold off until then. If I don't see any updates by the end of June, I'm just going to buy.

It's always difficult to know in these circumstances - when an upgrade seems imminent - but the standard wisdom remains true: If you need it now, buy it now.
I just ordered a 17" from Pentagon in Melbourne, for my business partner to use at home. They are offering $200 off plus we can claim the GST so it costs us $1450 which we depreciate over 3 years. It's good value now so I went for it. I'm sure the new ones will be fantastic - they always are - but this is a good deal & it will meet his needs for some years.
