I'm looking to buy an iMac in the next couple of months too.

Apparently Leopard is coming out in October.

Apparently the new iMacs are coming out July-August.

I am just wondering, can I only get Leopard for free if I buy after it has been released? otherwise how much would I have to pay if bought before?

I'm not sure what Apple's policy regarding Leopard is, but when Tiger was released, all old stock being sold with Panther installed got a free upgrade. So, for that to work, you'd need to wait for Leopard to be released and purchase an iMac with Tiger to qualify for an upgrade.

Like I said though, no-one has any idea what Apple is planning to do yet. I'd like to see them offer redeemable coupons for a cheaper Leopard upgrade between now and October so people don't have to pay the full retail price (I think it's slated to cost about $199 or $129 with edu discount, as these are the current prices).
