How long should the fully-charged battery last on my 17" Powerbook?

At present it is less than a few hours - and not doing anything special like downloading stuff or anything!!

How old is the battery? How many cycles has it been through?

Open up a Terminal window (found in the Utilities folder) and copy this in:

ioreg -w0 -l | grep Capacity

Now hit enter. This will give some details on your PowerBook's laptop. If you need help decoding/explaining them, just paste them back here.

It also depends on what is running in background, eg Airport, Bluetooth etc and on Energy Saver settings
Cheers

To get the best battery performance do the following.
Reduced Power / DIM Screen

Looks like you have charged your batery 158 times
Battery is about 95% healthy.

You should get about 2 hours on that.

Mine gives 2 hours with screen dimmed and settings on low, only doing very basic stuff.

Just wondering if you could help out a newbie Mac user and tell me where I can go to do this - is it in System Preferences?

Leon's 'translating' was spot on - your battery is still in pretty good condition!

You are looking for 'Energy Saver' in the System Preferences.

When it had a new battery, the most I ever really got out of it was about 2 to 2.5 hours.
To dim the screen you just use the F1 key.
To put the laptop into Energy Saving mode just click on the battery up in the menu bar and and select bettery energy saving when you are running off battery.

Either will be fine. You can basically put an application anywhere you want - the Applications folder just exists as a convenient place to put them all.
