Purchasing Mac OS Panther directly from Apple
My brain's a tad fried. Over-easy.
Is there still a link in : http://www.apple.com.au - where one can purchase Mac OS X (10.3.x) directly online?
I can't seem to find it - only links to purchasing Mac O X 10.4, and forums about Mac OS X 10.3.9.
Any ideas?
cheers,
cw

And you would want to do this because?
If you have your original install disks (assuming your mac was purchased in Panther times, as mine was) then you could use those to install Panther. This will only work on the computer that they came with (or another one of the same model?) as they will not work on any other Mac.
If you cannot find anything online, take a trip to your local apple-resseller and see if they have any copies floating around (highly unlikely, but you could give it a shot).

Reason: Corrected below about System restore disks.

No they won't. The System restore disks that came with your computer when new are only allowed (By the EULA) to be used on the machine they came with. For example, I have 10.3.3 on a System Restore Disk, however it can only be used for PowerBook G4's, with the 1.33 or 1.5Ghz CPU. I could put them in my PowerMac, however they won't work on it.
eBay is your best friend. Remember that Apple stopped making Panther when Tiger was released, or almost two years ago.

Ok, you learn something new everyday. I have never tried it before, and even though I said 'apparantly' i was still pretty sure it would work.

I'm pretty sure the install disks from one PowerBook G4 would work in another PowerBook G4, i don't think any manufacturer would want to spend the time personalising each set of discs for each machine, plus when discs are replaced because they don't work, and when logic boards are replaced the original serial number can only be accessed physically.

eBay? My best friend? Ahhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaa! Recalls Funny Picture Book incident.
No - I was just wondering. I cut copies of anything I purchase as the originals always get stolen by some greedy bugger. I have a three disc Panther Installation Set but Installer 1 is very screwed up. No scratches or anything - just extremely unwell - may have left it in sunlight.
It's cool. I don't persay require the original set. I thought of an Apple Retailer having an old set laying about all neat and pristine - just wondered if Apple Australia Online still... you know... sold them.
No big deal Apple children

Yes, that will work, however if you put the PowerBook disks in an iMac, then it won't work.

CW, have you contacted Apple to see if you can get a replacement disc/set? After all its the licence, not the disc.

MM...this would be your best bet. Alternatly you could find an image online somewhere (should be fine legally as you already have disk 1 and therefore have a license).
What kind of machine are you installing on BTW? The latter G5 iMacs can't run 10.3 (well...they can be forced to but they don't like it)....I think anything after the 'ambient light sensor' iMacs will make you think your disk is screwed if you try installing directly.
Lastly, If you have a good 10.3 set that came with another mac (e.g powerbook) you can install it on a target machine by putting the target into target disk mode, attaching it to the aforementioned mac and starting the install from there. When you get to the 'select install destination' screen you select the target. Once the install is done you re-boot the target and voila...OS X is running (this method is also handy if the target has no working CD/DVD drive....and also, you should be fine legally as you already have a licence for the target).
Cheers, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Bartron
edit: forgot to mention...I have several boxed copies of 10.3 available
