[Merged] Apple Store - George Street, Sydney
Apple planning first Aussie retail store in Sydney?
Tejas, a MacTalk forum member may have discovered the first hard evidence of the first Apple retail shop in Australia. i found details of a lodgement to sydney city council regarding 367 George St Sydney, which reads as below:
Ground floor and mezzanine floors 1 & 2 retail fitout & changes to approved facade fronting George Street and for use for retail of apple products.
this can be checked by going to sydney city council's website and inputting year: 2006 and Development no: 1932
could this be the store?

Digs like that would be mighty expensive - out of the leauge of a simple Apple reseller, surely? If so, it looks like Apple Australia might actually be doing something productive (and costly) for a change!

Internationally, Sydney has a bigger profile than Melbourne, thus its pretty certain that the first Apple Store will be in Sydney... although we all know Melbourne is more fitting for a unique store

can one of our sydney friends go to the council and see if you can view the plans? see if theres an artists conception on what the "proposed facade" looks like? that would be a big indicator if it's a reseller with money to burn or cupertino.

Sydney is a better more classy location for an apple store this is good news. And George St is the most famous street of sydney this further supports that it's apple and not some reseller.

Well, the Apple Retail guru who fronted the resellers at the Principle's conference last year said that all Apple were waiting on was the right location in Sydney. I guess they found it :-)

367 George street is on the corner of king street and george street. 1 block from pitt steet nextbyte and 2 blocks from clarence street nextbyte.

Nextbyte has other stores in Sydney that aren't in the CBD, as well as broadway near the end of the CBD. There's also Myer and David Jones in the CBD that this would be in competition with they have apple store sections.

That it is so close to 2 NextByte's and also close to the DJ's and Myer's mini AppleCentres is a sure indication that this is Apple proper - anybody else would be insane to set up such a costly venture ($15 million, just for the building!) with such strong surrounding competition, but Apple knows it can succeed (especially with such a prominent location!)
