[Merged] Apple drops Mac Guy <- Turned out to be false
(taken from http://apple.qj.net/Apple-drops-Mac-...g/49/aid/72417 )
Justin Long really got noticed after appearing in "Dodgeball" (with Ben Stiller) and "Herbie: Fully Loaded" (with eye-candy Lindsay Lohan). Long, as you all know, is also in Apple's series of advertisements as the "Mac Guy." The concept of the commercials was to put the geeky-but-cool looking Mac side by side with the PC.
While the idea is clever, the plan didn't quite work. Apple learned that the viewing audience can't help but be irritated by the "smug little twit." Seth Stevenson of Slate, the online news and critic magazine, commented, "Justin Long is just the sort of unshaven, hoodie-wearing, hands-in-pockets hipster." Long's agent on the other hand said that the deal was never meant to be on a long-term basis.
What's going to happen now? Well, director Phil Morrison and journo-humorist John Hodgman are going back for another campaign of commercials.
Well, so much for Long's career as a Mac. We wish you well, Justin Long, and we hope people won't think you're a smug little twit the next time around.
I suppose the big question is, whether they do replace Justin Long, who would be the potential?
Stephen Colbert?

Ditto. I didn't see anything wrong with him playing the Mac.
Oh well.

The twist is that in the next version of the commercials John Hodgman will be playing the Mac guy.

He kind of gave me shits towards the end. Here's a thought: Maybe that's how most PC users feel though when "Mac Guys" join in IT conversations. Perhaps it started to piss off potentail switchers.
I could aways laugh at the PC Guy.

I was under the impression that it was never stated why Justin Long was dropped apart from his agents comment that he is a 'move star not a commercial guy'. Is the 'smug twit' remark a statement from Apple or just one critics opinion?

They could have an add of a kid playing an imaginary piano on the table and then state that Apple can help the kid achieve his potential.
oh wait
Ads that are parodied are good ads. It shows that people are paying attention to them. People only parody things that are part of modern pop culture.

New Mac Ads with a new Mac
Apple Computer has dropped Justin Long, the "I'm a Mac" actor in the "Get a Mac" commercials, for its next round of ads, according to an exclusive report by Radar. The publication said that Justin Long's management had confirmed that he will not be starring in future Apple commercials, and that more commercials featuring John Hodgman as the "I'm a PC" character are being produced.

That's been floating around for about a week...last I heard that wasn't the case, and he will be appearing in the next batch of ads that'll air just in time for xmas.

This rumour is all over the place, not sure what is correct and what is not, but this was posted a few days later:

As for the Mac commercials, I don't know where that report came from that said I wasn't going to do it anymore Im literally setting my alarm right now to wake up for a Mac shoot tomorrow -we're doing some holiday spots now which I think will be pretty funny.
