I can understand Apple insisting on exclusive use of the term 'iPod', but targeting businesses (and in Australia now as well) that merely include the word 'Pod' in their name is over the top... It's an actual word that has a number of definitions!
They are renowned for creating beautiful products, but this is the ugly side of Apple.

I really think it's a case of trageting companies that have products with names simillar to the word iPod...not just with Pod in the name. Part of trademark law in the US requires you to actively protect your trademark from people using simillar or the same name for other products. If you don't you could lose it altogether.

I'm so sick of people (Yes, Leo Laporte) trying to change the name of "podcast".
I think its far too late for that now.

Apple are just trying to defend a trademark...
if you have a pod something and want to trademark it apple will come after you.. that is fair enough...
if you just use the generic term...I believe there are no problems...

Perfectly legit. Good on Apple for removing barnacles from it's hull. These parasites who quite unoriginally try and profit on the backs of the ideas of others! If they have a good enough product then they should invest in their own marketing and not ride in the slipstream of other businesses. That's just plain unethical. What's more, all you whiners out there should be glad that Apple can bring to you such a wonderful product at such a realistic price. You can't achieve that by allowing others to unethically steal your intellectual property.

Are you being sarcastic, iSlave?
Defending a trademark is one thing, but Apple profited on the backs of independent podcasters. They sold a ton of iPods to people who thought they needed one to listen to podcasts. They have no right to the expression 'Podcast'. It's in the vernacular (and the dictionary!).
They also can't claim ownership of the word 'pod'. Line6 has produced a music product called the Pod for 8 years now, easily predating the iPod. Apple doesn't have a leg to stand on.

I don't think thats necessarily true. There's only a fraction of the population that listen/watch to netcasts.

Reminds me of a case recently when 'Cadbury' took 'Daryl Lee' to court over the use of the colour purple. Sad!

I am glad that Apple has taken this action and not at all surprised.
I am surprised that no one seems to understand that Apple is in fact protecting podcasting for all of us. Podcast Ready/Infostructure Solutions are trying to register Podcast Ready and myPodder as trademarks and Apple has responded. Why should this company earn the exclusive right to claim that their products are "Podcast Ready."
It would be wise for people to do some research before running downhill with the great unwashed masses screaming "It's an outrage" based on a wired.com blog of all things.
