In a word "Don't"
well at least if you give creedence to the buyers guide at macrumours. Every single Mac product is recommended as a do not buy.. with the exception of the MacBook Pro (buy if you need)
and the MacBook (no historical data available).
I'm actually itching for a new iMac... but I think that there will be a revision sooner rather than later.. the new intel chip and some cosmetic changes.. (maybe in black too).
But my desires are not the topic...
I just thought it was interesting that practically everything in Apples line are at a statistical "do not buy" point.

Errr... there's the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) coming up in the next few days. It's never smart to buy an Apple product before Macworld San Fran (MWSF) or WWDC.
I doubt the iMac will change though. Maybe a minor speed bump.
And as for the "MacBook (no historical data available)"... it used to be an iBook, so you can work out the likelihood of an update based on that.
They really need to split the iPod products up to shuffle, nano and iPod on that page.

Depends which one you want to get... but, obviously wait 2 weeks.
The Core 2 Duo are chips are in transit, but I suspect MBP and iMac won't get an update until September. It'll be Mac Pro and Xserve first, then Mac mini, iMac and MBP & MacBook.
Also depends on what else Steve is going to unveil.
Remember that they'll want to have a 'new' model to ship Leopard on in January.

Well aware of the WWDC.. waiting with baited breath... my point was regardless of Apple events... statistically everything is inline for a revision....
edit with the exception of the statistically unknown MacBook (does that make you feel better SE?)

but you can't sit there and wait forever for 'the ultimate' computer... otherwise you will wait forever... so the solution? get a computer now that will do what you want it to do at a 105% capacity!!!
hence i bought a powerbook with full knowing that within 5-6 months the new intel macs would commence releasing

New models will always come out. If you don't buy one now, you'll buy one later. Then another newer and better model will come out. And you will only kick yourself for not waiting.
Moral of the story: Things will always get better and more value for money. Buy what you need now. If you need the computer now. Get it now. If you can wait. Then keep waiting.

sigh!! I guess my point was missed...
its not that you should really wait for the new releases...
its that statistically the whole mac line (- the macbook) are ready for revision...
therefore in theory (based on statistical history) the WWDC could announce a whole new line of Apple products.
I know it won't happen... I was just making an observation.

You're missing a very crucial point... the MacBook isn't statistically unknown. It's an iBook. And... the intervals are very similar for all Apple hardware, so you should be able to make a very educated guess as to where it's going and when.
Here's my prediction:
MacBook - Next update will be a small speed bump... buy knowing that all is fine
PowerMac - We all know these are dead... buy if you need something now that runs CS native.
MacBook Pro - Will change to Core 2 Duo in either 1 or 2 updates, both within the next 4 months.
iMac - I'd say the next update will be a small speed bump... I doubt these will be Core2 for a while
Mac mini - These will only get a small speed bump as there next update.
Feel free to quote me on those after WWDC.

What's your reasoning behind this Marc? Why won't the next revision of them both be to Core 2 Duo?

Im not missing anything
Its not an iBook it is a MacBook. (It uses an intel chip) and as such there have been no revisions since its inception. so it is statistically unknown. the macbook pro has been revised once since release and therefore has a history. Given that the revision happened so quickly since the original release I would say it is an anomoly, but stranger things have happened.
The main point I was trying to make... and I guess I failed.. was now is a good time to be excited about new releases... as anything is possible.

I just bought a new black MacBook.
Very happy with it, however, I am totally hanging out for my 2Gig of RAM to arrive! 512Mb is simply NOT ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!
I bought it knowing that I can sell my 12" Powerbook 1.33GHz with new battery and 1.25Gb of RAM for $1,000.
I still remember drooling over the LC 475!
