Well after hearing all the rage from my friends I picked up a copy of Delicious Library.

‘Delicious Library’, from the folks at Delicious Monster, is a cataloguing program focused to be as easy to administer for a home user, or as powerful for a leading American Library. I downloaded installed the app, and started a new library. I then added the borrowers, which seamlessly intergraded with Address Book. I added all the borrowers, and boom!

To add a book, you just have to click the plus sign and enter the title of the book, and click ‘Find’ and boom shows you all the possibilities and just click plus and puff, you’ve added a book.

And it announces using voiceover when you add it

In terms of movies, there exactly the same automatically goes to Amazon, gets the details and Boom.

Music is also as you would guess the same.

To borrow a book all you need to do is drag the book (the picture of the book) to the borrower icon and boom, it’s checked out to that borrower. You can even select the date they have to return it.

Another great feature is providing a location for the item, which lets you view the books by location. Like State of Fear, the book, is located in the Study.

Spotlight searching of your library is quick, sweet, cool and excellent Integrating perfectly with Spotlight

One of the most published features is iSight Scanning, a huge leap for home use. Works with most webcams, including the Logitech Quickcam 4000 and of course the iSight, But the ever-popular Quickcam Orbit is not supported. iSight scanning seemed to work effectively but the speed doesn’t compare to a barcode scanner.

Recommendations, is a basic feature, which will let access Amazon recommendations straight from Delicious.

Another feature is Voice search, which I’ve used to search through my entire library, as you would expect, not that good, because it’s using the built in speech recognition. I’m not going to use it but I can say it works if you have some patience.

One of the new features is the Dashboard Widget, quick easy searching through your library right inside dashboard. Not my favourite feature, and a bit pointless, but its there

Bluetooth scanning is here! You can purchase a Bluetooth scanner from Delicious, for a hefty amount (but reasonable for the use), with means you can walk around and scan your books and get them automatically added in the library. Haven’t tried it myself because I don’t have the scanner, but looks cool.

In conclusion, Delicious Library is a fast, smart and good-looking product from the excellent folks at Delicious Monster. Using some amazing technology, with some mind-blowing features, it is the best cataloguing product for home use out there!

4.5 out of 5

It really is a great program, with 2 drawbacks: (1) Australian barcodes don't seem to work too well so almost all searching would have to be done by title lookup, and (2) the actual lookup is not too fast.

I downloaded 1.5.3 to try it out and had to add DVDs by title and look through the french listings to get covers that matched. My book/mucis/DVD/game library is not small so doing all this work becomes cumbersome. I do not have a barcode reader or an iSight.

If all you want is the listing with a lot of very good automatic information and don't really care if you have the US, French or other non-Australian printing then Delicous Library really is great.

I do like their company and where they started: "Monster Fueled by Caffeine", ww.wired.com link .

I have a pritty big dvd, cd and book collection and my addition of a isight to my g5 means I can use this program. I aint scanned everything in yet, but thus far its been really good.

Aussie DVD's dont show up (not on the amazon database) but everything else does. Its a really nice program.
