Some history:
For a long time, the only way to have text on a page in the specific font you wanted (if it wasn't Arial/Verdana/Times/Courier) was to use an image. This is pretty much a Bad Thing ™.
Then some people came up with the idea of using Flash (which can embed fonts) with JavaScript, to dynamically replace certain text (generally headings) with a flash object that renders the original text in the font you desire. However it relies on flash AND javascript, and I believe using flash for text is yet anothr Bad Thing ™
Now, someone has come up with a way to render text in your desired font using VRML/Canvas -
Cufon. Neither is something that has to be "turned on" by the browser (nor can they be turned off
AFAIK) and the support for these is pretty good with modern browsers. It also means you don't get Safari going off it's tits with 98% CPU because the flash plugin is a piece of shit.
