Default Project - Home Made Speaker Dock

Might as well document the build of my home made iPod / iPhone speaker dock here.

Basically I'm going to rip apart some old Yamaha speakers I had sitting in the cupboard and build them into a nice, classy speaker enclosure (all in one).

I'm starting with Yamaha YST-MSW10 and YST-M10. I bought the speakers in Hong Kong when I was about 15yrs old (and that was 15 or 16 years ago). I remember they cost me a fortune. They've proved to be excellent speakers over time and sound just great. The only problem I have with them now is that the connectors on the back of the speakers are a bit dodgy and they crackle a lot. Lucky we won't be using these connectors, at all in the new project.

Background info of these speakers:
YST-MSW10 (woofer)
YST-M10 (speakers)

I plan to gut out the speakers and electronics and fit them into a custom designed timber cabinet using a nice classy timber, have routed edges, an integrated apple dock (perhaps), optional aux in, line out, etc. It will run on A/C power (as the speakers currently do). I don't plan to do any major electronic mods, mainly just it all in a new enclosure. Maybe have a nice new speaker grill too. Ultimately the shape will kind of resemble a rectangle box, like the Apple iPod speaker dock.

Default dismantle it!

First step is to dismantle the orig speaker housings on these bad boys. Here I've ganked the guts out of the speakers, and started on the subwoofer.

Subwoofer, slightly tampered with:

Subwoofer, rear. Whole back comes off, holds electronics, acts as heatsink for amp

Subwoofer back plate, guts. Transformer, amp/x-over, box full of inputs/outputs, some wire:

L & R speakers dismantled. The R speaker has two boards, the L speaker has only a tiny PCB with an input socket on it. Quality oldschool paper/pulp cone drivers, meaty magnets:

Next I'll be further dismantling the subwoofer enclosure, then commence the measuring of each of the original enclosures so I can design the new enclosure and get the volume right so I don't screw up the sound these things make. I'll either re-use the original cardboard ports, or make new ones.

here's a shit drawing of how it will kind of be designed. One large box with three sep enclosures inside:

more soon!

I've been sick for the last week, so it's not been getting far. I've done the dimensions for the new enclosure and just need to get the timber to build it.
