Windows software review (no, this is not a joke) - Rocketdock

Firstly, this is probably old to some of the existing experienced Mac users, but may help some of the newer Mac users.

Yes, it may seem somewhat "wrong" and no doubt the review will probably invoke the gag reflexes for a large number of people who are hardened mac addicts and consider touching windows to be sleeping with the enemy. The reason I decided to write this is because some of you out there may want to OSX your windows at work, or you VM. Yeah, its not quite installing OSX on your machine, but at least you pretend you're not using Windows for the odd couple of hours between each system crash or blue screen.

I installed this for my wife as a means to try get her smoothed over to the idea of using OSX (she will be getting a Mac for her next machine whether she likes it or not) and after installing it on her machine, I realised how helpful it would be on my own machine and promptly installed it on the 5 VM's I have running. In short, its a dock for windows, and it'll make you feel a little more like you're using Mac. I won't go through a massive review of docks vs windows, if you're here, no doubt you know how good it is working with docks, but it does mimic a large amount of the functionality found in OSX, and best of all, its free.

The functionality as it stands is simple, its a dock, has some basic functionality like mac including minimizing windows to the doc, bouncing icons when they need action (like when a mail arrives in outlook), zooming in as you move your mouse over the icon, you get the idea. You can also adjust the themes of the dock.

So for those people stuck with windows work machines, VM's or boot camp, here is your chance to feel at home again. As I said, its free, and you can download it from RocketDock - About RocketDock. There are also plenty of custom docks, icons etc available if you don't like the standard ones.

From my wife's perspective, she has now put a copy on her memory stick to put it on her work machine, and this of course is the first step towards moving her to the dark side. Now that she has tasted the fruit, it'll be hard for her to resist it when it comes to machine replacement time.

Aside from the pixellation on the dock icons, that actually doesn't look too bad. Much better than Dell's effort.

rocket dock is awesome! and unlike dell it's freeware and developed by normal people not hardcore software engineers

Yeah, works well. The only thing missing are the 3D style icons from OSX, the XP ones just look crap in comparison to my leopard dock. If I could find that for it, it would be perfect (or as perfect as XP could ever actually be).

Thanks. I managed to find some nice 3D icons for it as well and I changed the My Documents icon to Finder...my transformation of windows is almost complete.

I already themed my work XP machine with the FlyaKite OSX conversion, so it looks like Tiger already. But I may change the dock to this one instead.

[SOLVED]How To.....

OK, so I downloaded the zip file from the site and unzipped into a folder.

Question is: what do I do now? I'd appreciate any advice on how I get to instal the Dock - I read the Help pages on the website and they're comprehensive - EXCEPT there's no explanation about how to instal.

I realise I'm showing how dumb I am, but I'd really like to give this a try. Hope someone can help.

Did you download just the icons or rocketdock as well? There should be an .exe file to install the dock.
