Syncman, if people didn't take little risks here and there nothing would ever happen.

What is the risk here? if anyone looks at the setup at Z's house they'll see an unsecured wireless network and that will be the end of it.

A (developing!) point for people who are sharing their wireless networks, especially with Meraki and Open Mesh devices.
Yes??

Also, a quick q about the Meraki - If i have unit set up to my modem, and have created a network, and the guy next door does the same, will there be just the one network, or two networks? Can we both provide bandwidth to the network (assuming one network is created)?

The unsecured or public wireless the unit publishes has no access to your lan devices, it merely allows the public wireless a means to get to the internet router device. Doesn't allow them to see the other devices on the private lan. If you want the unit to also provide a private wireless network then it can be configured to do so. But of course you wouldn't want people outside using this, they should remain using the public side of the unit.

IF using a Pro unit, then you can setup a free period (or 2 billing options). The Standard devices are free public side only and no billing for that public wireless. They do still have a private/public wireless setup if required. No need to have 2 wireless devices. The 1 unit will do a private and public from the one unit.

Pro units cost 3 times more then the standard. I still want a Pro as Z did so I can setup 2 billing options and let people use it a bit more permanently but have to pay for it. Help cover back the cost.

I'd love to get a few extra and have the neighbors put them in, so they can extend the coverage. That way I can use the internet from a park at the end of the street, and get the signal seen from the people at the cafe/takeaway opposite park.

Will see how I go, will get a unit via next group buy that gets done.

To be honest i'm not entirely sure, but i believe the networks mesh and share bandwidth, depending where you are connected your traffic will route to the nearest Internet connection.

I don't know (yet) how having many different networks near by will work, but after the next order I want to set this up to see how it works.

I'd imagine that if all the networks are free you will roam freely - and the mesh takes care of how the traffic gets routed to the Internet, if you have Gateway's that require payment you will have to go though the login process at some point.

Again, I'll be able to give you more detail once I have more units to test with..

At the end of the day, that's really the idea. Being able to use the net where and how you want or should be able too...

Hopefully with some exposure like we have here and we can help make the Net more accessible - that, and we all get to play with some cool kit

I've got a Pro Outdoor setup in East Melbourne, not much use so far, nobody seems interested in free wi-fi.

Well done !

Have you put your network on here? (Safari doesn't load the map for me, Camino works a-ok though)

I can't believe that Melbourne is being smashed by Sydney-siders! Have a look how many nodes they have...geez.

Hey thanks for the map

Check out Maleny in QLD, they seriously look like they almost have an entire street covered

Not many networks in Melbourne

Well I printed off a heap of flyers and put them in all the letterboxes in the street, plus one up at the supermarket around the corner. Will be interested to see if anyone contacts me regarding the free internet

@zillatron

Have you checked out Meraki Network Mapper It uses the API from the Meraki Device's Public Settings. and you can see what other Meraki Networks exist in your area.

Which is what I thought made you miss it. Is anywhere interested in getting anything, as I am thinking I will just buy a Mini - Pro direct myself. SO if anyone is interested in obtaining something, then maybe we can come to some arrangement on the splitting of the US postage costs (and then they can pay for the express post satchel to get the item to you). Or you can pick it up from me.

Anyone?

Yeah I am aware, much the same as the Sydney guys too. They have a facebook group which has details on any group buys taking place (and what might be left over from last group buy).

Thanks
