Yeah, I've had my battery replaced. Really, if you're close to the end of 3 years, it's probably best to get the battery replaced along with your power supply if it's giving you issues. The magnetic ones tend to be a bit weak at the joint near the computer end. Once the genius bar opens up, it'll be even more worth while to hold APP.

One important thing about AppleCare Protection Plan - it only covers manufacturing defects, not accidental damage. That cracked LCD pictured wouldn't actually be covered by an APP.
Also if you choose store-offered "extended warranty", you'll need to deal with the store if there's problems. Apple, and Apple Service Providers, won't be able to help you with those at all.

Strictly speaking it's not supposed to cover "consumables", which the batteries are classed as.
In practise though... yeah, they get replaced...

I've owned at least 10 Mac's over the past 15 years, 6 of which are still in use today and not one has any repairs needed to it.
So even if my next purchase has problems I will still be in front.
I maybe lucky, having problems with your Mac after Warranty is certainly possible, but it is definitely not the norm.
If you feel more secure having it then get it.
Me! I'll pass.

As a matter of intrest most insurance companies can offer you insurance of your laptop under your house and content insurance. It is usually a bundled add-on you can get for the laptop, so it might pay you to look at this for insurance.

I guess I must like living dangerously as I've never purchased AppleCare with any of my computers.
Frankly, the price is too high!
I decided that the Trade Practices Act would cover me for "un-merchantable" products that were "not fit for purpose" and my wallet would have to wear the rest...
I looked at both options and made a decision based on the amount of risk I was prepared to wear versus costs I would incur.
Everyone's decision criteria will be different.

I don't have house and contents insurance (I don't own a house and I buy and sell too much stuff to bother with contents insurance) - I would like to look into solitary laptop insurance though.

APP can be purchased on eBay in America for a great deal cheaper than in oz. The sites will then email you the serial code and you register on line. I think I saved about AUD200 on an APP for my MB.
I have always had an APP for all my macs.
However, I extended my warrantee for my classic 80G ipod with Harvey Norman which offered a 3 year warrantee for about $49 which also covered the battery which was the main thing which I thought would be the most likely thing to fail (apart from the HD).
LIke other comments, insurance is peace of mind. If you never claim you lose, if you do, you lose.

AppleCare sure paid off for me. It got me a Mac Pro to replace a G5 DP 2.7 PM that leaked coolant:
G5 Coolant Leakage
I've always bought AppleCare for all my Macs including my two G5 Xserves. I've only needed it for the G5 PM, but I'd buy AppleCare again for everything if I had it to do over again. It's not just buying a 3 year extended warranty, but also peace of mind.

Im still undecided, So if you buy it off ebay they are hocking off the tech tools to someone else?
I bought mine on the gold CC so I have the extended insurance from that though I'm not that clear on the details.

Contents insurance is a good idea just to give peace of mind in the event that your "stuff" is broken, stolen, or burnt to a crisp.
I use Suncorp for contents and personal effects insurance and it covers you Australia wide and overseas for up to 30 days.
This covers my laptops, pda, and camera equipment (which are specified on my policy.) It gives comfort knowing all my possessions are covered against accident and theft.
For all my major purchases I always use my Gold Visa card which gives me an extra 12 months warranty.

+1 for buying off eBay.
Matter of fact, I just did it last night
I paid $297 as opposed to Apples RRP of $579 (MBP). A saving of $282, so I'm pretty happy with that

If you have AppleCare and using Leopard, make sure you download TechTool Deluxe 3.1.2 update from Micromat. The CD in the box is not compatible.
