Wicked all going to according to plan thats about when I was considering an upgrade.

My current phone works for now, but I am getting to the point where I need and upgrade, and well this may be a convenient excuse

Yup, sounds about correct considering that apple charge around US$15/month per customer from the carriers which comes to around US$360. Add to that US $399 for the 8GB model. and then about 10% currency conversion.....comes around the $900 mark!

But carriers could subsidize the phone depending on what contract is offered!!

Talking RE: Australian iPhone Release Info Given to Resellers by Apple Australia

That's the best news I've heard in ages!

Great news... though I think I'll wait and see what the prices/plans/finer details are before getting too excited.

Fuck. 12 months into a 24 month contract, and I'm saving for overseas. Oh well. iPhone version 3 for me I guess.

Looks like Apple won't be happy with AT&T... Apart from the Australian carriers being total idiots, maybe thats one of the other reasons Apple doesnt want to lock into any more 'deals'.

Just a thought.

Does it show that I'm a cynical bastard when I think that Apple might just try and pull a fast one by selling Australia V1 iPhone stocks as they introduce 3g V2 iPhone in the USA / Europe?

Oh and my guess for the price $666 ;o)

NO, not going to happen. Apple maintain consistency in their product cycles and I would be SHOCKED if they did what you are suggesting!!

Anyone that thinks Steve Jobs is coming to Australia to anounce the release of a 3g iphone needs to have a reality check.
What, you think Steve woke up and thought "where is one of the smallest markets in the world that I can release our much anticipated 3g phone"
Excited the phone is being released here but seriously Steve coming out to announce 3g on the iphone, i really dont think so.
Also, the australian market is too small not to make a phone availble to all networks and Ir eally dont think it matters if it's only sold through one carrier it will end up everywhere anyway

Impossible when they said the'yre not going to be locked into a specific carrier like Telstra. And for those early iPhone adopters you knew this day will come soon enough. The Apple Sydney store opening will be completely swarmed with the media if Jobs uses it as a stage to launch the iPhone! 3G please!!!!

Is this bad news for people who already have iPhones in Australia?

Not really - those devices will still work, they may still be able to upgrade to 2.0 software, there will still be a global unlocking industry so heaps of support.

Only potential downside for existing owners is if there's also a hardware upgrade ... and we've known for ages that 3G is coming this year anyway.

Decryption said: "However, if a 3G iPhone is released, it won't matter, as all telcos have a 3G HSDPA network (either running on the 2100mhz or 850mhz frequency, both of which are supported by multiple 3G chipsets in mobile devices)."

Does this mean that the iPhone v2 will work on the nextG network, as this is a 3G 850mhz network?
