If it is being sold unlocked, as has been reported. Then it will work on prepaid. The problem you'll have with prepaid though is data. There's very little point in having a 3G iPhone without decent included data.
Based on the original story, I think we'll most likely see iPhone specific plans from at least Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, if not others. Regardless of whether the phone is subsidised/included in the plan.
So for example, one of the carriers 'might' offer unlimited data along with a cap plan if sign up for a 24 month contract.
Those kind of plans would really make the most of a 3G iPhone. And your definitely not going to get anything like that with prepaid, at least not anytime soon. But yes, it would work with prepaid. Just like the current imported iPhones do.

I think as mentioned, Apple Resellers would mean NextByte, CompNow and so on.. I'm not sure if stores other than the Apple Reseller dedicated stores would get them ey?
What about phone stores?

I assume you are including Domayne in this. They aren't dedicated to Apple but have their little "Apple Stores" set up inside.

My brother has a friend who is well placed with Apple Australia told him yesterday that an imminent iphone release here is not going to happen, it's just a rumour.
They are good mates and my bro' has been given good tip-offs from him before, but I guess that it is also possible that he is just covering his arse.

For every one person that says it isn't coming, there are always a couple that say the reverse...
I've had the reverse of late from workmate and another friend that both have family members that are 'key personnel at Apple'. I don't hold much credibility to these either though...
as I say to them, until it is formally announced / released, it seems it is just speculation.
I do want to believe though... I just wish Apple would hurry up!
Don't think we'll hear anything now until WWDC at least.

My thoughts exactly, everyone claims to have "creditable" or "high up" sources... I spoke to a guy that worked for apple (was in the shop the other day) he said anybody that actually knew would not share the info so it (what you read on forums etc) is all BS.

Being a Iphone user myself, I can't help but wonder how these 'unlocked' phones in oz will be controlled. Will you receive an 'unlock' code at point of sale that will help you activate through Itunes, or will the IMEI number be sent to Apple who then works it's magic so that the phone unlocks through itunes. Whichever way it is, it will be interesting to see how current 'unlocked' iphones in oz fare. Will there be some way that they can be legitimized? I am guessing not...
Will or will it not be released in June... It is great to speculate either way, and watch the days tick by till June. Given the length of this thread, interest levels are high across the board.

My prediction is that it'll be similar to Europe. The phone will be sold locked (so that Apple don't have to bother boxing up a separate set of iPhones that are already unlocked) and activation/unlocking will be controlled via iTunes. If the IMEI is one that's been designated for sale in Australia, it'll allow the handset to be unlocked (perhaps with a country lock in place so that only Australian SIMs can be used).

I noticed that the local gym in my area is advertising a competition to win and iPhone...not sure how they can do that when it's not sold here yet, maybe another indication that it's release is now very close!

Not really, no. Those dodgy late-night SMS competitions (you know, the ones that ask you to select who makes the iPhone A: Apple or B: Cadbury) have been offering the iPhone as a prize for a while.
