That's why I'm inclined to believe what was reported. It's a "big thing (tm)", so resellers will need time to prepare. I also doubt that any store managers would know anything at all. This sounds like the kind of thing an executive would know, but not a store manager.

There are more than 4 resellers in Aus, yes.

hmm... now remains the question of how much of a premium over the touch the 3G iPhone will be over the Touch.

Actually Telstra are already doing this to get EDGE working properly.
I was actually going to post about this. If the iphone is unlocked resellers will need to provie ways and means of getting telco deals with the phone. I am sure there would be profit to be made aplenty for the resellers if they had time to align themselves with a telco company for commissions.

I'm sure you would need maybe 6-8 weeks to have time to find a reasonable deal and nail down the particulars. With deals it would mean the resellers could maybe sell at a reduced price and would be quite an advantage.

That's one thing I'd really like.

Well, what I hope for/want is for it to be available on pay-as-you-go! I don't want to be locked into a contract with any phone carrier ... Do people think this will happen?

And - good on you decryption!!

Telstra do this now, not cheap though. Cost of an SMS per messages. It works with all phones AFAIK, so I assume it would work with the iPhone, but it is a conversion of voice to text, not sure if it the same technology.

Asher can't report this, as the source isn't one of his or his newspapers. Everyone the reporters are contacting are denying all knowledge, as this was for us only.

I reckon thepumpboy has been told the correct thing - that like other phones in Australia, it will be sold via multiple carriers, each of them locking it individually, as well as being sold unlocked at Apple stores. Since the market for phones in Australia is considerably smaller and consumers are notoriously picky, this makes a lot of sense.

I think it's a fair assumption that Apple always intended selling unlocked phones. It was just a matter of when. It's funny how "OMG!" some people are taking this news

Great news on the iPhone 3G too! And great scoop MT.

Guess Apple wants in on Asia and Australia is the place to trial 3G before tackling the big markets.

But still, I'll only really believe it when I'm laying down lots of my hard earned in the Apple Store and the box is right in front of me. Call me a cynic.
